My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Max and Rex were turned into the shelter because their owner was no longer able to give his dogs proper vet care or feeding. Max is a very nice older boy; he came in underweight and starving, with a case of intestinal worms, but by some miracle, no heartworm! He LO VES having people around who will pet him and give him attention. His tail is constantly wagging, and his whole back end wiggles even harder if you’re looking at him or speaking happily to him. He seems to have good energy, and doesn’t act like an older dog much, but he does enjoy sleeping in the evening after a walk. He knows “sit”, and will offer his paw for shaking, but has NO clue about anything else (he seems to be a bit of an airhead, but VERY sweet.) He doesn’t like to jump into the car, but will if he has to; he prefers being lifted in. Once in the car, Max is very interested in looking out the windows, and if not restrained, will try to climb all over the car.

Max is crate-trained and housebroken (although we had a few days of marking episodes when he first arrived.) He will push his head against your knees for attention, and just stand there while you pet him. He is a bit ‘grabby’ with taking treats, but we are working on that, and he is making good progress. He is lacking in leash manners, but is getting better at that with daily practice. I think a no-pull leash or harness would work even better for him.

Max doesn’t jump up, but will raise his paw to solicit petting or to nudge you if you stop too soon. He enjoys being outdoors, and will sit and survey the landscape if he has time. He likes to chew on bone-toys (Nylabones or similar) and will chase a ball if no other dog is around. (If another dog is after the toy too, then Max will not compete and will go away.) He doesn’t mind being brushed, or having his nails clipped.

We do not know how he is with children, although he seems interested in the neighbor’s kids when they’re out in the yard. We do not know how he is with cats, although he tries to chase the ones we pass on our walks. He seems fine with other dogs his size or bigger, not sure about smaller ones. He is just a big lovebug, and would really enjoy a home of his own - I think he would do well as an only dog just because he would get more attention, but he will be fine with other dogs as well.
