My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

My name is Shelby. I am a beautiful @ one year old fawn that and am blind. I still have a lot of puppy in me! I am very happy despite that I can't see and am very cute. It will take me a few days to learn my way around but be patient with me as I will follow the sound of your legs and be bumping into you a lot just to be sure you are there. I like to give kisses and love the loving back in return. I can't tell you much about my prior life, but I'm sure it was one that wasn't very stable because I do tend to be a little insecure and needy at times. I get along well with other dogs and love to play with them. If you have other animals, they need to be patient with me, too, because I will accidentally step on or bump into them sometimes. My foster sister-dog is older and a little cranky and I've learned to leave her alone. I also have adorable tulip ears. I am petite but stout and strong. I weigh around 38 lbs. When you leave for work or errands, I will stay by the door and wait until you come home most of the time. Because I'm blind, my other senses are strong and I am a great watch dog. I can hear things before the other dogs do and will warn you about it. I make you laugh when I want to play because I jump around freely even though there's nothing there to play with. My foster mom gives me lots of nylabones to chew on to keep me busy as I do tend to get bored sometimes. Stuffed animals work, too, but I like the nylabones better.

I was not potty trained when I came into rescue and my foster mom has tried very hard to teach me where to go. I do a great job most of the time but will have accidents every once in a while. A doggie door or an open door is good for me so I can go out when I want. I do tend to get mad if you leave me and get frustrated at my disability and will let you know by tinkling on the floor. It took me awhile to get used to my new home but I am feeling more secure every day. I'm so worried that I am going to be left again and at my young age, I don't understand that I will be taken care of and will be okay. I have gained weight since I've been in rescue but again, because of my past, I am always looking for something to eat. When I find it, I hoover it down. Remember, I am a sharpei, so I will be stubborn at times, but it's just my nature. I know my name and my foster mom yells "careful!" when I'm about ready to bump into something. I think I've gotten that down pretty well - she watches out for me. You can't move furniture or boxes around on me because I've memorized everything that is there and if you put something there that I can't see, I'll run into it. I've been fixed and have had entropian surgery. If you don't mind looking into eyes that can't see you back, I will make you very happy. Even though I can't see you, I can feel you looking at me and I know you're there. Even though my foster mom will miss me terribly, she knows that I will be going into a wonderful home and it will give her room to take care of another dog in need.
