My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

3-22-10: Check out beautiful LadyBird's new picture! Seems she is becoming quite a snuggler, and she would love to snuggle her way into your forever home! Contact us today to apply for this southern belle.

1-24-10: LadyBird has now been here in Maine for a full week and her foster reports that she is doing well. She has started to play with her foster dog brother and loves to wrestle and play tug-o-war with him. LadyBird is still interested in the cats and would probably do best in a home without them. Although she does not hurt them, she does see them as a fun thing and does not understand they don't really like her. LadyBird was lucky enough to go to the beach with her foster family and saw lots of new furry friends there. At first she was so excited that she barked at every new dog, but figured out they were okay with a firm "shh" from her foster. LadyBird is housetrained and lets her foster family know when it is time to go outside. And she LOVES soaking up the sun (a true southern girl)!

01-18-10: LadyBird is now in Maine and her foster reports that she is doing great! She says that LadyBird is a very smart dog that has already picked up on the routine of the household. At first she was not sure about the snow, but once she gets out she loves to go for walks. If her foster dog brother gets too far ahead of her on her walk, she howls at him! At first she was interested in playing with the household cats, but got a little too close and now has decided they are not quite as fun as she thought. LadyBird will respond to the command "leave it" or "no" and so appears to have had previous training. She also will come when you call her name. LadyBird's foster says that she is a very sweet dog!

11-25-09 Ms. LadyBird is a gorgeous adult English Coonhound. She has had such a tough road and deserves a shot at a good life here in New England.

LadyBird lived in a truck for years with her owner who was a long-distance truck driver. One day he tired of her and dumped her out at a truck stop in front of witnesses. Two kind souls picked her up and she was taken to a shelter, then into rescue, and then moved to a beagle and hound sanctuary. When she first went there she leaped the 4 foot fence and was attacked by two neighborhood dogs. Since then, she has recovered from her physical injuries but remained nervous because the two offending dogs live close by to the sanctuary. She is now being boarded and not getting the exercise and training she is used to.
LadyBird is housetrained and crate-trained. She is such a good girl that she received her Canine Good Citizen certification. She would love a new family that has at least one runner, and she can pace a car at 25 mph!! A fenced yard would have to be a 6-foot fence to contain her successfully.

LadyBird has a hard time with smaller dogs. She is about 45-50 lbs and a sleek beautiful girl! She enjoys male dogs her size and larger, and would probably love to be an only dog. The vet estimated her age at 6, and she is super-healthy and ready to roll!

The manager of the sanctuary loves LadyBird so much and wants to see her find just the right forever home where she can relax and be herself. She tells us, "Lady Bird is extremely intelligent, very communicative with her eyes and body language, and her new home will find her one of the easiest dogs to "read" and understand. She is completely housebroken. She is an utterly loyal dog who, after learning and trusting her people, will BE their dog, either as an adoptee or foster. She is very physically fit, and she does have a special friend at Silverwalk in Shiloh, a larger Beagle. Lady Bird will play bow, wrap her front legs around him in a hug and then dance away with him. She is good with men, women and children. I LOVE Ladybird!"

Please contact us today for an application, and thank you for considering rescue!
