Bruno's Story...
Allow me to introduce you to 'Bruno', a young and beautiful American Staffordshire Terrier dog who is so lucky to still be alive, having beat some overwhelmingly bad odds that were stacked against him. It's almost as though this fellow has won a lottery of sorts with his very life as the prize! In December, Bruno was unfortunate enough to find himself on 'deathrow' at the infamous Mahoning Pound in Youngstown, Ohio where they regularly kill their charges by 'heartstick'. The 'heartstick' method is an incredibly painful and barbaric way to euthanize an animal, especially given that there are more 'humane' alternatives available. The animals are not anesthetized in any way... instead they are physically restrained in a manner which is bound to create additional terror, and then a long needle is literally jammed through layers of muscle tissue in the animal's chest, directly into the heart. All done while the poor animal is fully aware and struggling against the intense pain! Unbelievable cruelty! At any rate, Bruno's date with death seemed imminent, especially since he couldn't even be adopted by an individual or family; due to 'breed bias' against Am Staffs, Bruno's only chance of escape lay with a rescue agreeing to take him. At this time, all available kennel space was already taken at Southern Indiana Rescue Effort, and we had no intention of committing ourselves to a dog we had never met or even seen. It wasn't until we had read repeated 'pleas', over several weeks by a Katia Grossman in New York, that we even began to look into the situation at the Mahoning Pound. When we finally did agree to take this gentle giant, he would have to be temporarily housed in a back pole barn, and we would need to quickly build a heated dog house. There was an entire array of logistical problems relating to our ability to save Bruno and, somehow, everything literally fell into place. Most central to saving Bruno, though, was the sustained effort and cooperation of Carrie and Paulina of Canine Crusaders, a rescue group that attempts to save as many lives as possible at Mahoning. We sincerely thank you, Paulina and Carrie...you helped a wonderful boy when you helped Bruno! Then, while most people were busy celebrating the holidays, 5 wonderful volunteers across several states donated their cars, time, and gas to drive and deliver Bruno to safety! A 'paws up' to each and every one of them...Bruno is safe and happy, and is now being offered for adoption to an appropriate family or individual! Bruno is a blue and white American Staffordshire Terrier, approximately 2-3 years old and weighing in at 60lbs. He is exceedingly gentle and loving, a big 'doofus' of a boy, with no aggressive tendencies whatsoever. All Bruno wants to do is play and he gets along well with all other dogs, although we suspect that all bets are off when it comes to cats. While Bruno absolutely loves kids, he is a large and powerful boy who could easily knock a young child down without intending to, and will need to be trained not to jump up. Even though we are not sure if Bruno is accustomed to being indoors, we consider him effectively 'potty trained': this sweet boy has never had any accidents in his kennel whatsoever, and we believe his transition to indoor living would be a smooth one. If you would like an opportunity to meet Bruno, or would be interested in adopting this wonderful boy, please call or text Deb at 812-430-8009 812-430-8009 today! This fellow will definitely win your heart! :) Bruno is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.
