Sophie is a tiny female former breeding dog. For the first 3 1/2 years of her life she lived in deplorable conditions being bred repeatedly for profit. Her next to the last litter almost killed her and her vet advised that she not be bred again. Anxious to make more money out of her, she was sold to another family for breeding purposes. She was bred again and nearly lost her life, her 4 puppies died. Her most recent owners found out about her previous vets recommendations(after the fact)and were distraught that they had put her through another pregnancy. Fortunately for Sophie, her new owners cared about their dogs. They called GEBR to re-home Sophie so that she would never fall into the wrong hands again. An attempt at spaying Sophie was unsuccessful because of severe adhesions around her kidney. She will have to be spayed at a teaching hospital where support services are readily available. SOPHIE WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION UNTIL SHE IS SPAYED.
Surprisingly Sophie is otherwise very healthy. She does have a few issues related to poor care. in the past but is looking better everyday. She loves her people and children. She gets along well with dogs her own size but is intimidated by larger breeds.
Update(3/6)Sophie feels more comfortable in her surroundings and gets along with all our dogs, even the 70 pound shepherd. She just needed a little more time to feel safe.
UPDATE: Sophie will need to undergo a very expensive spay surgery. We had a close call with a uterine infection while trying to raise money to pay for the spay but it can no longer be delayed. Please help us help Sophie. This sweet girl has had a horrendous life up to this point. We would love for her to experience life without pain or other health problems and just be a pampered pet.
Update 6/17/2010: Sophie has undergone her complicated spay surgery and pulled through with flying colors. After recovery, she will have entropion surgery. Sophie's surgery cost nearly $2,000.00. Please consider donating to this worthy cause...we can't do it without your support.
