My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Abby is a 2 year old Fawnequin that is bouncing because of an incident with the other dog in her newly adopted home. The fosters have fallen in love with Abby. She is a very good girl and aims to please. Abby loves to stick close to people, leans, reaches out to touch you, kisses you. She will heel if you ask her to, otherwise will sniff like any other dog would.

When we walk past dogs, Abby generally ignores them. I decided to see how she would fare with a Rhodesian Ridge Back intact male in our neighborhood. She was fine with the sniffing, but when he tried to mount her and when he put his paw on her back at another time, she let him know she was having no part of it. Her reaction was reactive at that point, but no different than any other female dog I’ve had. She also leaned up against me at that time and let me know she wanted me to walk her away from him. It truly seemed that her preference would be to get away from him rather than fight with him.

To my surprise, when she spotted a cat sitting in a driveway, she abruptly turned and tried to get away. I am wondering if it was a cat that gave her some of her scrapes/scars.

Abby has loved every single person she’s met. She will ask for affection, but if it isn’t given, she backs off. Abby sits and lays down in response to both verbal and hand commands. When she comes in from outside, if her paws need wiping, she lets you pickup each front paw then lies on her side for you to wipe her back paws. She’s not too thrilled with nail clipping, but not awful either. Today I decided she was just too stinky so I tried again to get her into the shower. It took quite a bit of patience and praise, but we got there and she was very cooperative once actually in the shower.

Abby is house broken, you just have to know her signals. However, it seems that she sometimes pees if left alone. I really think she is just afraid of being left. She is not destructive, totally trustworthy that way. She just lies on her bed if we leave her.

The only time Abby is not trustworthy is with food. She will take any food if given the chance!!

Update 5/6/10 - Abby has no food issues in the sense that you can pull her food away while she is eating and she just waits for it to be returned. She is a very mellow 2 1/2 yr old and knows stay and come. She is the most loving and sweet dog I have ever come across. She is not much into play toys but just loves laying on her bed in front of the fan and getting belly rubs. She actually purrs like a cat when you rub her belly. She does love to go for a lot of walks and does love to run and play outside but in short bursts. She really brings a smile to our face everyday because she always looks like she is smiling herself. Any family would be lucky to have Abby. We have not left her alone yet, we will work on that next week. We really have not been around any dogs so we don't know how she reacts yet. We are going to try to get her more socialized next week and we will give you an update on how she does.

Update 6/20/10 - We have been socializing her with other dogs more and more and it is going very well. She definitely gets along with larger dogs and still has issues with small dogs. She is fine with the small dogs as long as they don't start barking at her first, otherwise I think she feels she needs to defend herself and gets aggressive. She has a St. Bernard friend that she plays with in the neighborhood and we have been visiting Tammie and Jerry almost weekly for play dates with Sasha (2 yr old female dane). We let them run in an enclosed ballpark and they have a great time wearing each other out. They are not the perfect mates b/c Sasha is very rambunctious but they get along fine.

Abby is very smart, learns quickly and listens well. We have had no issues when we leave her alone. She does not appear to have any separation anxiety. She has stopped her counter surfing (I think that was more of an issue about lack of food). She truly is a joy to have.
