My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Claire is a very sweet and loving black (with a little white spot on her chest) Newfoundland Dog who was surrendered by her owner for personal reasons. She lived with that family for the last three (3) years after having been adopted from a local rescue group, so we cannot be sure of her exact age, but think she is at least 6 years young.

She came to her last owner with chronic ear infections which resulted in an ear canal ablation of her right ear. This means that her ear canal was surgically removed while the ear flap is left in place. If you didn't know it had been done, you'd never know from looking at her. She still hear OK, the vet says it's like putting your hand over one of your ears, muffled on that side. Claire did have some yeast in her left ear (but no infection) and is currently on a medicated cleaning regimen which is working fine in conjunction with feeding her a hypo-allergenic food. The vet gave her a clean bill of health otherwise.

Speaking of food, she is definitely overweight (from overfeeding and/or lack of exercise). She is getting less food and more exercise so that extra weight is starting to come off. She is very food motivated!

Claire has a slight limp on her left front leg which could have been due to an old trauma or simply a structural defect. She does not appear to experience any pain and puts full weight on that leg.

Claire was given a summer cut just before being surrendered which is why she doesn't have the long, rich coat you would expect to see on a Newf. Her skin looks very healthy and her coat is coming in nicely, we expect she will have plenty of fur for the winter and cuddling up to.

There is no doubt at all that Claire is a Newf! While she never learned how to swim, Claire shows her water dog personality by drinking from the bottom of the water bowl! She immerses her whole nose, so it will be helpful to have a towel handy. This sweet girl is fine with other dogs and cats; she has been around children with no problems. Her former owner said she had some fear of storms. Claire enjoys a good chew toy and a tennis ball. She loves everyone and likes to lean against you and be adored. She has not had formal obedience training, but is house trained and does know sit and come and walks easily on leash and is learning more manners in her foster home (including crate training). Claire rides easily in the car and perks up at the words go and ride. She will bark occasionally. Claire also did very well getting her feet and ear hair trimmed plus a bath, blow dry and toenail trim (using a dremel tool).

When it comes to getting attention, Claire is very subtle at first, but she will nose your hand and if that doesn't work, she has been known to paw. Of course, being in a strange home, there is no such thing as enough attention.

Claire is quickly settling in and so she needs to be placed in her permanent home as soon as possible to minimize any further displacement trauma. All in all, this wonderful girl is a wonderful companion and should fit easily into any family.

A fenced yard with a minimum height of 4-feet is required for adoption.

If you plan on submitting an application and you are out of our region, once your application gets approved we require that you come to our area to meet the dog and foster family. If that goes well you will be able to take your Newfie home with you.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions. Our adoption fee is $250.00. If you are interested in adopting Claire, you can find our adoption application on our website at http://www.hanc.net/rescue.html or you can request an application using the email address on this page and we will email or mail one out to you.
