My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UPDATED BIO 10/4/2010: Penelope (Penny) is a wonderful 6 year old 11 lb (currently on a diet and should be closer to 9 lb) little girl who is currently being fostered in Ft Myers, FL.

Penny was lucky that UYR was there to rescue her. When she came home, it was evident that Penny had a urinary tract infection. Turns out she probably had that UTI for a long time and she developed crystals..... crystals go on to form stones. Penny had several large stones in her bladder that made it so hard for her to urinate. Also, the stones took up so much room in her bladder that she had to go potty all the time. We brought her in for surgery immediately. They opened up her bladder in a procedure called a cystostomy and they removed the stones. YAY! Now that she has been treated, she will need to be on special food for at least 6 months, maybe forever. Don't worry, it isn't any more expensive than the premium dog food foster mom feeds her own pup! In time, Penny's adopter's vet may choose to try her off the prescription food to see if she still forms crystals. If not, she may be able to be weaned.

In any case, either way you are getting a wonderful little girl. She is friendly, housetrained, loving, cuddly, and... well... her flaw is she begs. And she is NOT allowed to have anything besides her prescription food. No treats or table scraps PLEASE or else the prescription food is not doing its job.

Thank you for reading about sweet Penny. I fear if she had been adopted to a member of the public from the shelter, instead of being passed up (why, I will never know!) she would not have had the opportunity to receive this expensive surgery. Thank you to everyone who makes these miracles happen everyday for the yorkies in UYR!

ORIGINAL BIO 09/17/2010: Penelope (or Penny as she is lovingly nicknamed) is a wonderful 6 year old 11.2 lb (very overweight) little girl who is being fostered in Ft Myers, FL. She was brought to a high kill shelter by her former owners who were moving and could not take this little girl with them. Penny definitely has room to lose a couple of pounds and would likely be a healthier weight at 9 lbs. The diet starts tomorrow!! She just came into her foster home this evening and is adjusting quite well. She's getting along just fine with the other furkids. She goes outside to potty, but she doesn't seem to understand how to walk on a leash.

Penny will receive a full exam and labwork prior to having her teeth cleaned under anesthesia. She also was given a less-than-flattering haircut by her former owners. However, she looks almost identical to Nellie, a then 18 month old yorkie girl who is featured on our happy tails page (look carefully! There are two Nellie's) :) . You can see how beautifully her hair grew out. Penny just needs someone with the foresight to see her for the wonderful girl she is and the gorgeous yorkie girl she is and will become. Thanks for reading about her! We will post more soon as we get to know her.
