My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ADOPTED 5/2011

We all seem to know a cancer survivor who is so filled with life and hope for the future. Well, meet Willie and add him to the list of those big, strong fellows who are winning their battles!

When Willie first came to SGRR, he was an overweight boy of 103 pounds! His loving foster has been very dedicated to providing Will with the best of care and Will has become his foster’s regular running partner. The loss of 10+ pounds and regular activity has done wonders for this gentle soul and he is just thriving now! Will craves attention and bonds quickly with his caretaker. Will recently visited his foster’s mother in Brooklyn and was so sweet and gentle with this older woman. He has a very special gift for gauging emotions and is so willing to provide the love that one needs. He will be your golden shadow and will follow you everywhere.

Willie is an 8 year old pure bred Golden that was surrendered to a local shelter with Charlie, a Beagle, when their family lost their home. (Charlie has since found his forever home!) Sadly, more and more families have to surrender their beloved pets in such situations. The local shelter contacted Sunshine for help and we were only too happy to step in and help find forever homes for the dogs. Willie needed to be updated for his vaccinations and also had a suspicious growth on his shoulder. Since then, Sunshine had Will updated for his vaccinations and had the tumor removed. The growth was a mast cell tumor, grade II, but the margins were very clean and it is very likely that Will has a future filled with sunshine.

Willie has a magnificent Golden coat and the most compassionate brown eyes you can imagine. Will is good with cats and people. He seems to prefer smaller dogs rather than large ones but will respect all dogs. Even at the age of 8 Willie does become a bit excitable so we recommend him for families without small children. Will’s foster has been working with him on his leash skills. He is an eager learner and so ready to please! Will is looking for a home with someone much like himself – someone who enjoys a bit of brisk exercise followed by an afternoon by the fire. He is a very easy-going companion. If you have room in your heart for this loving fellow, please be sure to apply soon. Willie is ready to grab his leash and GO HOME!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit.
We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
