My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Hugo! Hugo is nine years old and is mostly Basset. He was rescued from the pound where he came in as a stray. He is very friendly and loves attention from all of the people he meets. He especially likes it if that attention involves FOOD - Hugo has a bit of a weight problem. The first night he spent at his foster home, he showed us his signature trick, which is sitting up on his bottom to beg. He even has a cute little "gimme" gesture he does with his front paws. Obviously this technique has worked for Hugo in the past (he weighs 67 pounds) but now that he's with AZBHR, he's dieting; against his wishes, of course... Hugo loves people and doesn't seem to mind other dogs. He's growled at his foster brother and sister Bassets a couple of times when they got too close to him while he's eating or sleeping, but for the most part they all get along. Hugo has tried to coax the other hounds to play a couple of times. He does well with the other dogs, but he may also enjoy being the only dog in his forever home because he enjoys attention from people so much. He attened a recent neighborhood gathering where there were small children and he did very well with them, so he might enjoy a home with children. Someone also brought their cat on a leash to this gathering, and Hugo had almost no reaction to the cat, so he may tolerate them as well.
Hugo does have a couple of bad habits. He likes to get into the trash, both kitchen and bathroom. We are working on correcting that habit, but it may be a tough one to break right away. As mentioned earlier, he has been taught to beg but we are also trying to break that habit since it's not good for his weight, and probably not good for his back when he sits up like he does. Also, Hugo DOES NOT like being in a crate! Fortunately, he is well-behaved when left alone in the house unconfined, except for his trash-raiding: he doesn't chew, he doesn't get on the furniture, and he is housebroken.

We do not have a doggie door so it is unknown how he would do with one. Hugo seems very smart, though, so it's likely he would figure it out.

One last thing about Hugo: he has been "de-barked" so his voice is more whispery and squeaky, not like other hounds. He still uses it, though, to greet us when we come home from work and to warn us when the neighbors are making too much noise outside. He is really very sweet and very good-natured and he will bring a lot of love to his forever home.
