(by foster mom Gwen) Jaybo is the ultimate estate dog or farm companion. Walking him gives me an urge to buy tweed knickers and Wellington boots. This young, robust, big chested boy is magnificent to look at with his large, square head and his calico patches on a deep chocolate background. He is playful but not rambunctious or high energy; he has a dignified bearing which makes him seem older than his two years or so. Toddling along is his favorite gait, with the occasional burst of joy that lasts about 10 running steps.
If this dog had been publicized as a pup he would have been in a forever home long ago. He and his litter mate Patches have been the easiest dogs I've ever fostered. They blended immediately into my pack of four large dogs that include a Great Pyrenees and a German Shepherd. All of my dogs like him. He is also completely neutral to my cats and even to my chickens. In fact he and Patches have lived unsupervised with my chickens and dogs, something I have not trusted other foster dogs to do.
He has been an outdoor dog most as far as I know, but he is polite when I do invite him indoors. I have not had him stay all night inside just because I have four big dogs of my own and it gets a little crowded. But if it is important for his adoption I will have him stay indoors a few nights to make sure he will not relieve himself until morning. I've never had an adult foster dog fail this test; it's against their nature to make a mess in the space where they live. Jaybo doesn't even like to relieve himself in the pen; he waits til I let him out each morning.
His gentle, wise eyes tell his entire story--he's a solid, loyal dog. Jaybo is not as outgoing as his sister Patches who bonds with everyone she meets, or even see from a distance! He will hang back a little bit until he is introduced to a new person. But after a couple of pats on the head or a face to face chat, especially if treats are involved, he will happily accompany you anywhere. I can walk him in the woods and pastures without a leash. He doesn't have a high prey drive and prefers to trot along with a person instead of running after rabbits or other interesting smells.
He is happiest wherever people are, but he is not needy. When I'm doing chores around the farm, he loves to follow me. If I have to work in the horse pasture where it is not safe for him, he simply lies down near the fence and keeps an eye on me. He doesn't whine or bark in frustration. For the year or so that he was at the rescue kennel he became accustomed to not having constant company, so if you must leave a dog along during the day Jaybo would be a good choice. He loves a pen or a crate and will often sit or sleep in one that's open, just because he feels at home in them. He also loves to lie by my feet while I work on the computer or while I sit on the couch. He does not get on the furniture, but I'm sure he could be coaxed to do that if his owner wanted him.
Whoever gets this boy will be fortunate, indeed. His beautiful sister Patches is also at my house and is just as sweet as Jaybo. They are available together or seperately. I take pictures of them on our walks, so if you want to see more photos than the four allowed on this site, just let me know at gwenroland@gmail.com
Rescue Group Info...
We are a small all volunteer state licensed non-profit rescue in rural Georgia. Our county does NOT have animal control so the public and deputies are allowed to control strays by shooting them. It is pathetic that in 2012 we are allowed to shoot domestic companion animals as stray control. We are working hard to save what we can and are willing to transport our adoptable pets to the area to give them more exposure and a second chance for a forever home. We have many more available pets than what we have posted. Contact us if you are looking for something in particular or if you aren't looking for a particular breed but know size and age range we'll get back to you with what we have.
We are presently not holding adoption events in the area but we do bring preadopted pets to their forever homes once a week.
We have a nice selection of puppies, adults and seniors available for adoption so if you are looking to add a new pet to your household please contact us. Email gets a faster response.
Minimum requirements:
1. At least 25 yrs. old
2. Steady employment (this will be checked)
3. Valid driver's license
4. Vet reference
We have an application and phone interview process. There is an adoption fee usually $200. All of our dogs are vet examined w/ fecal, heartworm test, spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations including rabies, deworming, microchip and on flea & heartworm preventative.
Every pet transported is examined by a GA licensed vet and have a current health certificate.
