My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dodger

Breed: Golden Retriever Mix

Gender: MALE

Age: 1-2 years

Adoption Fee: $450

Dodger is one of the most special dogs on Earth. He is about 1-2 years old and is a Golden Retriever mixed with pure happiness! He is sure to capture your heart and steal away any sort of sadness with his “I love life” attitude! What's more - there's not much Dodger doesn't like: people, dogs, noises, laughter, music. He's just so interested in life and he soaks it in with delight! Dodger's the kind of dog that makes you know that it's good to be alive. And he's suitably named as he truly dodged a totally unacceptable fate when he was brought into our rescue and was not euthanized as had been planned because of a heartworm diagnosis at such a young age. It took all of one second after hearing the shelter's evaluation of him to say “yes!” to rescuing him. We joyfully took Dodger into our care knowing we could easily place such a special dog. Great care was taken to vet him properly and ensure he was rid of the awful heartworms that he should have never had to endure in the first place.

Dodger was adopted by a wonderful family with children for him to adore and another rescued dog to enjoy. They totally welcomed Dodger into their loving home. Due to circumstances beyond their control, this family is not able to keep Dodger much longer. As hard as it was for the family to come to this decision, they know it is best for Dodger.

Dodger is totally house-trained. He has free run of the house when the family is out and is 100% trustworthy. He loves the car and he races to get in to go for a ride. Dodger knows his basic commands and attended an 8 week puppy class. He knows that he should not jump when people come to visit. However, his exuberance sometimes gets the better of him. He needs an experienced owner who will be firm with him and nip his excitement in the bud. Dodger has a high energy level and needs an active owner with an energy level to match his own. Dodger is often taken for daily runs which help him keep that energy in check. The family feels that Dodger’s ideal home is one where he would have a resident doggy pal to play with and follow around. A fenced yard would be ideal for romping in between walks and runs. Homes with children 10 and older would be best as Dodger’s exuberance for life might be too much for little tykes.

Dodger has no food issues whatsoever. His current family, including the kids, can touch his bowl and food while he’s eating. He doesn’t care if other dogs are around while he’s eating. Dodger will sit before receiving his bowl and will eat when he is told, “Ok”. He sits nicely for treats and takes them gently out of your hand; the kids’ hands too. He knows the words “treat,” “cookie,” and “are you hungry?” Dodger has some food sensitivity and is on a limited ingredient diet. It is recommended that he is kept on his current brand of dog food and treats- Venison and Sweet Potato formula EXCLUSIVELY.

It will be very, very hard for this family to say goodbye to their “Puppy Dodge,” but they know he needs a home that is better suited to his needs than they can presently provide. Their loving home has been an excellent stop-over on the way to Dodger’s forever home. He is so much healthier and better socialized than when he arrived. Most importantly, he has learned what it means to be a beloved member of a family. Apply today to make Dodger a cherished member of your family!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit.
We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
