Revkha

Say hello to Revkha, pronounced like Rebecca with a V. This little doll was
found behind a grocery store and scooped up by an employee dumping trash one
morning. She came to one of our foster moms very small and weak. She needed to
be bottle fed, but over time she was nursed back to health. Now she runs around
as if the world were her playground! She is very loving and enjoys snuggling,
especially inside your jacket or on your lap. Revkha’s foster mom has spoiled
her (as she does all her darlings), so Revkha is used to lots of affection and
is always purring. She loves children as well, even purrs while being carried
around the house by her foster mom’s son.
Unfortunately, we discovered recently when doing routine testing that Revkha was
exposed to the Felv virus, either in utero or in her first weeks of life.
Although sometimes called “feline leukemia,” Felv is not a specific disease but
an immune deficiency that could make Revkha susceptible to infections and
certain other illnesses throughout her life. She will need to be fed a good diet, but
not raw meat, and most of all, her adopters will need to be vigilant so as to
provide prompt treatment for any infection. Of course, she can never go
outdoors, where so many germs are, and because Felv is communicable to other
cats, Revkha should live in an only-cat household. (A household with another
Felv-positive cat would also be possible, although an only-cat household with
plenty of attention from her people would be better for her).
In a safe environment and with proper care, an Felv positive cat can live for
years after diagnosis. Some even live for years without showing symptoms. Of
course we have this hope for Revkha.
Many of us love cats because they have so much to teach us about what it means
to be fully attentive to another creature. Cats are not obsequious, their
motives are not complex, and their signals are very clear. If you show Revkha
you care for her, she will reward you richly for the rest of her life. Please
consider letting her steal your heart as she has ours.
