My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jane spent all 4 years of her life in a cage in a puppy mill. She is very shy and timid but already starting to wag her tail and enjoys the company of her doggy friends. She is very sweet-natured and when you look into her sweet schnauzer eyes you can tell she wants to learn to trust people. She is looking for a calm adult home with at least one other dog to help her feel more comfortable. Please submit an application if you are interested.

3/29/10: We just participated once again in Best Friends' "Pup my Ride" Puppies aren't Products program (visit their website http://network.bestfriends.org/campaigns/puppymills for more info on puppymills). They rescued over 160 dogs from puppymills in the Midwest and we took in 10 of these special little dogs. All have been neglected physically and emotionally all of their lives and will need special homes to help them heal. Many were filthy and matted, with rotting teeth and ear infections. A few are very friendly and outgoing and enjoy any human attention; others are more shy and will need work and patience to learn to trust. All are in the process of being taken care of by our vets and will be ready for adoption soon- please submit an application if you can give a home to one of these special dogs.

These poor dogs have spent their whole lives in wire cages, churning out litter after litter of puppies to make $$$ for their greedy owner. They have never received proper vet care, been walked on a leash, or had a soft bed to sleep on. They lived in filthy conditions and were not properly groomed. These are the lucky ones- we were able to rescue them and make sure they will get the loving homes they deserve. Many more like them are simply shot or drowned by their owners when they are no longer needed, or sold at auctions to other millers where they will continue to be bred.

These dogs are all understandably nervous and confused in their new setting, but are sweet-natured and want to be loved. They are seeking calmer homes that will give them time to adjust and patiently help them learn to live in a real home. They get along with other dogs and generally do best in a home with another friendly social dog to help them come out of their shells. They are obviously not housebroken- some learn pretty quickly once on a schedule while others may require more patience or need to be wee-wee pad trained.

Our great vets at the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains are taking care of these sweeties and they are making sure they are all altered, updated on shots, treated for various skin and ear infections infections (a result of their poor living condtions), and giving them dentistries to clean and/or extract their rotted teeth. We are in desperate need of donations of funds to help with their medical care- even if you can't adopt one please consider donating even $10 toward their care. Donations can be made by clicking on the "sponsor me" button on this page, or can be mailed to:

Second Chance Pet Adoption League, P.O. Box 221, Oak Ridge, NJ 07438.

Most importantly, please remember the stories of these dogs and others like them. Every time someone buys a puppy from a pet store, breeding kennel, or broker, they are supporting the cruel treatment of their parent dogs and encouraging more dogs to be bred. Please refer anyone looking for a puppy to shelters/rescues in their area or to petfinder.com and encourage them to adopt a homeless pet.

We do not have a shelter- all our pets are in foster homes or boarding kennels and can be seen by appointment only during the week, or at our weekly pet adoptions every Sunday at the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains from 12:30 to 3PM at 3009 Route 10 East next to 5 Star Car Wash (formerly Boulder Car Wash). To help us better match a pet to your household, we request you fill out an application on our homepage www.secondchance.petfinder.com and copy and paste it into an email, or print it and bring it to our adoption day when you come. Local inquiries only please- we do not do long distance adoptions.
