My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UPDATED BIO 4/5/11: Dorothy is a 4.5 year old 5.6 lb little girl who is being fostered in Miami, FL. She suffered a spinal cord injury when she fell down the stairs. Today we have really promising news. Today she had appointment with the rehabilitation specialist for her cart fitting. BOY WERE WE TOLD SOME HAPPY NEWS!

Apparently, even though she does have some serious injuries, the vet believes she does have some voluntary movement in her rear legs. She was supported on a doggy treadmill and actually moved her legs to simulate walking. I cannot wait for them to email me the video so we can share it! We are going to order the special wheelchair cart for her without leg supports so that she barely touches the ground ...... and adjust it over time so that more and more of her weight is supported on her hind legs. The vet actually told me to try and get a used one because she doesn't think Dorothy will use it forever!!!!!! Can you believe it!?

They put her in a makeshift cart today as a loaner that ALMOST fit her. It was enough to give her the independence and freedom to run around the office on wheels. She looked SO HAPPY! It will do wonders for her spirit until her form fitted cart comes in. She will be going for therapy 3 times a week walking on a treadmill and will be getting special exercises for her legs 3 times a day. The wonderful vet gave us a major discount. I am so excited for Dorothy and hopeful she will regain the use of her legs. Please say some doggy prayers for her!

UPDATED BIO 04/2/2011: Dorothy is a sweet adorable 4.5 year old 5.5 lb little girl who is being fostered in Miami, FL. Dorothy has seen a specialist, and at this time, it is unlikely that Dorothy is a candidate for surgery. To much time has elapsed since the injury, and she does not appear to have deep pain sensation on her feet. She does, however, move her legs with what is called "spinal walking". It's a reflex movement, but lots of dogs with spinal cord injuries can learn to walk using this reflex. She will do best with a wheelchair that supports her body, allows her forward motion with her front legs, and gives her the chance to build strength in her hind legs. If she gets tired, there will be slings for her legs so they can still move, but they will be protected form the ground. We are also waiting for protective booties to come in the mail for her. On Tuesday, little Dorothy is getting fitted for her wheelchair from K-9 Carts East. We are so appreciative of our donors who has helped us raise money for her. The carts for a dog her size are around $300. Her cart will weigh less than 1 pound. (amazing!) Anyway, she is a happy girl and likes to play, eat, and go for walks. Right now she can only stay on the grass, but soon she will be faster than me on her wheels!!! She does still need to be spayed and have her teeth cleaned.
Thanks to everybody for their well-wishes :)

INITIAL BIO: My name is Dorothy. I am a 4.5 year old 5.5 lb little yorkie girlie who is being fostered in Miami, FL. I have a sad sad story, but you'd never know it because I am such a happy girl!

See, in my last home, some kids didn't treat me so well, and I ended up falling down the stairs. I spent a couple of months at the vet's office, where they determined I didn't have a fractured spine. I received steroid therapy and a lot of love and much needed rest. Now I am ready for some intense rehabilitation, and that is why the nice Dogtors called UYR.

Today my Foster Mommy took me shopping and bought me my very own bed, some new toys, and a life jacket so that we can start water therapy tomorrow. She's excited to get me in the pool so that I can build up some strength in my legs. I'm not so sure about this swimming thing, but FM wants to help me, so I'll try it. Well, the plan is to try really hard to help me rehabilitate. Right now I can get around very quickly by dragging my lower half (I have very strong arms!). I even pull myself up on my tippy toes at times. The Dogtor and FM say that's a very good sign. So, keep your paws crossed for me. I still need to be spayed and have my toofers cleaned. It will be some time before I am ready for adoption, but please keep me in your doggy prayers! xoxo - Dorothy
