My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sloane is a male dachshund who was abandoned outside the shelter by someone unknown. Since their owner did not contact us, we don't know much about Sloane... we are guessing he is about 4 years old, as he has very little gray in his muzzle, though he could be a year or two older (sure wish they came with "manufacturing dates" on their foreheads). He is a happy, sunny guy, who is eager to please and who doesn't understand much about toys and fetch yet. He seems to enjoy the other dogs at the shelter.

Sloane is several pounds overweight, so we have put him on a diet; he currently weighs 24 pounds and really should only weigh between 15-16 pounds at the most. We tested him for hypothyroidism, and his thyroid levels are normal, but on the low side of normal. That indicates that he does not currently need thyroid medication, but you will want to feed him at the low level of recommended food, and make sure he gets plenty of exercise.

He loves to be with his people and really enjoys car rides. He will sit on your lap if you invite him, and his tail is always wagging! Even though he has short little dachshund legs, he is a fairly brisk walker and is terrific on leash.

Sloane always waits to go outside before defecating, but the volunteers frequently find his bedding damp with urine; we thought this could be a sign of incontinence, but after much testing and experimenting we now think it mainly indicates just that he is having trouble "holding it" during the long stretches between the morning and evening caregiver visits. If you are home with him and can let him out every 2-4 hours, he should do pretty well. Losing weight will help, too, as that extra weight puts extra pressure on his little bladder. None of us have ever seen him urinate inappropriately while inside the shelter* or a vehicle, we just find his bedding damp. (*Except for some occasional attempts to "mark" areas that other dogs have also "marked" - hard to avoid in a shelter).

Like all our adult pet placements, Sloane comes with a 30-day money-back trial adoption period.

Spay/neuter, worming, microchip and all age-appropriate shots are always completed before placement, and are included in the adoption fee (suggested minimum $75; more gratefully accepted!)

Can't come to Republic? Don't let that stop you! We have monthly transports to both the Seattle area and Spokane, delivering adopted pets to their new owners. If you can add a little to your donation to help us cover our volunteer driver's expenses, that would be great!
