My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Love a fabulous, freckle-faced, full of fun little BC fellow? Well look no further, Pippin has arrived!!! A delightful combination of curiosity, sensitivity, and responsiveness, intensity and lightheartedness, affection, intelligence, energy, and athleticism, this is one talented and lively kid!! Top it off with a small flashy package, character galore, and a touch of mischief, and you’ve got Pippin!

Like many BCs, Pip is first and foremost super duper engaged. He’s vigilant and alert and keenly aware of his environment – if there’s something going on anywhere nearby, this boy is sure to notice it and wants to know what it is, yet he’s equally responsive and interested in his people. Rescued from a crowded small town Idaho shelter where he was surrendered by a family who could not have been less suitable for him, Pip is settling in to life in his foster home and proving to be a very delightful and very typical member of the breed. He is an absolute love sponge with those folks he knows and adores cuddling, belly rubs, and any and all kinds of attention, although he is far too mouthy and excitable to live with kids. He probably hasn’t had much exposure out in the world and can be wary of some new people – when frightened he will alarm bark a bit till he realizes it’s OK – but never gets so wound up you can’t get his attention, and his confidence and experience are growing every day. We expect with continued socialization, he’s likely to become quite a social butterfly given time and patience. He rolled in to WBCR and did well right away with the other 2 dogs in his foster home. He especially loves to play WILDLY with the other young playful female in the home – chase games, tugging, wrestling, you name it, Pip is game and is quick to initiate play with anyone willing! He is of course a bit of a teenage hooligan, plays kind of rough, and can pester the other less playful dogs but will knock it off when they tell him to.  When his younger 'sister' won’t play, he initiates play with his 16 year old 'sister'  and plays gently with her until she can play no more.  Pip is a typical young busy bee Border and is all about “doing” – he is on the constant search for stimulation and is definitely a higher energy member of the breed. He will need a lot of physical and mental stimulation to settle down and be satisfied – but he’s so fun to be with, it’s hardly a chore!! Pip is a lean, mean running machine when it comes to playing fetch.  He and his 'sister' race each other for the ball, with Pip winning just about all the runs.  He has learned to return the ball and drop it at our feet to start the race again.

This little 1-2 year old Border (and he IS little – just 35 pounds, but quite muscular and strong!!!) is also terribly bright as well. Pip is very attentive and loves to engage his mind; at the shelter we stood at the door to his kennel and, amid barking and running dogs, taught him to sit in less than a minute. He thought that was so cool – as did we!! Truly the sky is the limit as to what this boy can learn. Although he was pretty wound up when he arrived, and had difficulty settling down even after lots of activity, we are working on cultivating an off switch in this boy and are making progress every day. He now “turns off” really well indoors when asked to lie down, and is content to lie down in a dog bed and chew on a bone on his own when there’s nothing else to do. Good boy!! Pip probably lived inside as he does have good overall house manners. He’s also house-trained, uses a doggie door on his own and crates quietly. He’s learning the basics quickly, walks wonderfully on leash, and has quite a nice recall in low distracting environments.  He will definitely need adopters who are willing to continue with his basics training, help build his confidence out in the world through slow safe fun experiences, and who will give this boy lots of guidance and direction! Pip is “alottadog” and is sure to test limits every chance he gets – but is also sensitive and pretty quick to take the advice of his people to learn what is appropriate and what is not!!!

All in all, Pippin is a completely charming young chap filled to the brim with all the BC traits so many of us love, and once he flashes his silly smile at you, GOOD LUCK to your heart!! If you are looking for a total go getter who also has a great sense of humor, and who is teeming with potential, Pip may be the one for you.

Pippin is neutered, fully vetted and living in a loving foster home in Lander, WY
