Charity's Story...

Hello,

My life so far has been bereft of any kindness, but I hold no ill will, I just thought it was the way my life was meant to be. But in mid- June things began to change when a rescuer took me home from the shelter.  They gave me the name Charity.  I am not sure what it means but it sounds pretty.  A nice person gave me a big meal, a warm bath, and a nice clean, soft bed to lie on. I was overwelmed with gratitude. Maybe not all human beings are unkind.

In my past, people have been very unkind to me and I get so very scared whenever humans are near.  The new people here seem very nice but it is very hard for me not to be afraid.  At least I have stopped trembling whenever they are around and I am feeling a tiny bit more relaxed.  I do enjoy my new doggie friends here - they are all very nice to me.  There is a big lab that curls up with me at night and makes me feel safe.  I am really beginning to feel cared for, but I still feel there is something missing.  I have a lot of love to give, and am hoping that the something missing, will find me soon. But for now, I will wait here in this place, where my belly is full and my bed is soft and there are many gentle hands that are trying to reassure me that everything will be ok.  They tell me that I am safe and that they will find a family to love me.  They tell me my future is going to be full of nothing but love and kindness and for that I am grateful.

UPDATE!  9/16/11:  Charity has been spayed and is luckily heartworm negative!  She is making such amazing progress in her foster home.  She LOVES to run around the yard now playing with her foster pals Lady Ann and Phoenix.  She is starting to trust and will even get close enough for a few head scratches before she scampers off again.  She is doing so well that we hope to bring her to the next dog park adoption meetup so she can meet the gang!  With a little more time and patience she is going to make a very good companion.

UPDATE Feb 7, 2012:  Charity continues to make amazing progress!  She is a far cry from the terrified girl that she was when we got her to the confident playful girl she is now.  She loves to play and antagonize the beagles in her foster home and Phoenix is her favorite target!  He tolerates her like an annoying big sister.  She roams the 6 acres property where she is living but always comes back like clockwork and has the daily routine down pat!  This week she even came up and allowed some head scratching and a good back rub!  WOW!  Sounds like a little thing but for this girl who always keeps her distance it was an amazing breakthrough moment! She hopes to make her debut at and adoption meetup event very soon....

Our Adoption Process...
Steps to adopt a beagle from Tampa Bay Beagle Rescue:

Read about the beagle breed to be sure this dog matches your lifestyle and personality. While we think beagles are terrific dogs, we know that no one breed is perfect for every single family. Many people adopt or purchase beagles because they are small and friendly without ever finding out more about the breed. We encourage anyone who is considering adding a beagle to their family to learn all they can about these stubborn, playful hounds!
Submit an on-line application. Just fill out the application on-line and we will automatically be notified. If you need to, you can save your application and finish it later.
Choose to receive information from us. In your settings, you have the option to receive emails and regular mail from us. Click these options to receive updates about dogs available for adoption and upcoming events such as adoption days, special activities and fundraising events.
Approval of the application is based on phone interviews and a reference & Vet check. It usually takes us 7-10 days to approve an application, but when we are very busy, it can take a little longer. Thanks for your patience!
Visit with the beagles! After you are approved, you can visit with the dogs at adoption events, usually scheduled once or twice a month. Adoption events are open to the public, but only preapproved applicants will be able to adopt the same day. (We recommend submitting the application at least 10 days in advance to ensure it is approved in time.)
