My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi,

My name is Mervyn. I was rescued from a shelter in Iowa. About a week after I got here, I had to have surgery on my hip. The vet thought I had been hit by a car. The surgery went well but the doctor said it could be a few more months before I’m fully recovered. Stairs are still a problem for me and I still limp and hop around sometimes. I also tested positive for heartworm before I got here. It was what is called a “faint positive”. I’ve been getting some pills and will need to continue on heartworm pills every 28 days to make sure I don’t get sick.

I’ve been a perfect house guest and haven’t gotten into any trouble – no accidents, no marking, no chewing and very little barking. I sleep all night in my kennel with no problems. I’ve even been allowed to sleep on a dog bed instead of going in the kennel. I curl up and stay there all night. I haven’t gotten on any furniture, probably because of my injuries.

I’m a pretty mellow boy. I like other dogs, but I like a little personal space in getting to meet them. I’ve been to a few Petsmart adoption events and the humans have decided that I don’t like big dogs. I saw some really big dogs at the vet recently. My foster mom just kept petting me and telling me I was a good boy and I didn’t bark at any of those dogs.

Everyone who meets me comments on how sweet and cute I am. I’m an attention hog too. If another dog is getting petted, watch out, because I have to stick my head in there and steal some of the love. And before you know it, I’ll be on my back making you give me a belly rub. When you stop I’ll paw at your hand to get you to keep petting me.

I go in a crate when my foster mom has to leave. Sometimes I bark for a while but then I settle down. When I do bark it’s pretty loud. I’ve gotten better recently and she hasn’t heard me barking as she leaves the garage. I think I’ve finally realized that she won’t be gone for long.

At home, I like to play with toys. The soft squeaky toys seem to be my favorite. I like to tear into the stuffing and get the squeaker! We were at another dog’s house and I found a big rawhide bone that I started chewing. Sometimes I’ll grab a nylabone too. I lounge around on any of the dog beds in the house. Sometimes I just go curl up in the kennel too. My favorite is when my foster mom sits on the floor and lets me curl up with her. I love being in the yard and just watching the neighborhood too.

Please let the people at BREW know if you think I might be a good match for you.
