06/24/11: The Adventures Of Spudd
Here is the latest foster report:
"Spudd is doing well and enjoying himself. We took a drive up to my brother's house the other day where Spudd had a great time playing with my nephew and nieces, ages 5-12. Since the purpose of the trip was to deliver a car to my brother, we came back to NYC on the train where he was courageous and well behaved as always. Being a city boy, Spudd probably doesn't have a lot of experience with car travel and he vomited about an hour twenty-eight minutes into an hour and a half drive. But other than that bit of motion sickness, it all went off without a hitch.
Spudd is a very well behaved boy but still energetic, playful, and full of personality. He continues to impress me with how mellow and sweet he is. He loves his visits to the park, and loves to meet other dogs; he is full of wags and wiggles even for the crabbiest, little snarling yorkie....and we met that yorkie this morning.
We had some work done on my kitchen this week. Spudd spent Monday and Tuesday mornings over at my friend Richard's apartment, while I was at work and the workmen were in my apartment. Richard doesn't work until evening so they got to spend the mornings together, mostly sleeping probably. As always, Spudd was very easy and well behaved and Richard looks forward to hosting him again, probably next week, when part two of the renovation takes place.
Initially, Spudd didn't seem to appreciate the fun weekends we had coming up after we opened the beach house. He pretended not to be excited. He is such a city-boy; I wonder if he has ever been to a beach before. I have never met a dog who didn't love Fire Island. He is now enjoying the beach. He's not so crazy about the ocean, but he loves fetching the tennis ball, and he is better at fetch than most boxers of my experience. He brings the ball back. Spudd has lots of fun running in the sand. If he hadn't been to a beach before, he sure managed to figure it out fast enough. "
05/26/11: SPUDD KNOWS CARS!
Below is a funny update from Spudd's foster dad.
"Last night on our evening walk, Spudd and I passed a car the same color and model as mine. As we got close, Spudd pulled over to it and definitely seemed to anticipate that the door would open and he'd get inside. I had always assumed that dogs would do that sort of thing by nose. But this is pretty sophisticated. There are a lot of grey sedans out there. I did have to explain to him that we were looking at an 'i' trim style, while my car is the "s" trim style, which is better. That mistake would cost him two or three thousand if he made it at a dealership. But for a passenger, it is not very important. Wow."

03/09/11: Spud’s Days Were Numbered
Spud is a wonderful 53 pound five year old male boxer who was surrendered to a Shelter. His family could no longer care for him due to "personal problems". The shelter was at capacity and they needed to make room for the endless influx of dogs. As soon as we heard about his plight we made arrangements to transport him to one of our new foster homes in the immediate vicinity.
Spud had a behavior evaluation at the shelter which he passed with flying colors. The intake paperwork from the Shelter said he was great with people (kids included) dogs and cats. He is very well mannered, is perfectly housebroken, and does not need a crate if left alone. He is an incredibly wonderful dog and will be a catch for anyone that is looking for a loving companion.
Spud’s three out of four canine teeth are either broken or cracked. He also has a small growth on his left shoulder. These issues are not medical emergencies so we are waiting until Spud adjusts to his new foster home before we make a vet appointment to address these concerns. Spud is up-too-date on inoculations and was already neutered.
Here is the first report from Spud’s foster home:
“Spud is starting to relax but he is still a bit traumatized from his ordeal of losing his family and ending up in the shelter. He is very sweet and affectionate to everyone he meets. He is very easy going and a well behaved boy. He knows how to sit and stays off the furniture even though he is allowed on it here. He seems to want to curl up in a comfortable spot next to “his people”. He has kennel cough and is on antibiotics. I will keep an eye on that.
At first, Spud showed no interest in playing but I have discovered he likes tennis balls =) He walks well on a leash and does well in the City. So far, we are taking things slow so he can adjust to his new surroundings. Spud is great!”
