06/24/11: Rosie Deserves To Live Like A Queen
We received a notice regarding a stray senior boxer who was in danger at a crowded high-kill Shelter. The vet at the shelter estimated her age as 12 years old and she had little chance of being adopted.
She was picked up by one of our volunteers within 24 hours and went directly to our vet for a thorough examination and medical tests. We wanted to get some baseline medical information to assess her health . We named her Rosie.
The doctor gave Rosie a comprehensive physical exam (Senior Profile) which included blood tests, urinalysis, and radiographs of her chest and abdomen. Surprisingly, Rosie appears to be in relatively good health and had already been spayed. Also, three different doctors estimated Rosie's age at 10 years instead of 12.
The results of Rosie's visit with the vet were only remarkable in the fact that nothing horrible was found. She has a slight heart murmur (1 out of 6 =), and some hair loss that was attributed to Seasonal Flank Alopecia. She is very thin at 51 lbs which is 10 pounds less than her ideal weight. There were three small masses that were discovered on her chest and one on her shoulder; they were aspirated and turned out to be benign fatty tumors.
Rosie has an old scar on her left toe which the doctor thought could have been caused by catching her paw on a fence. Her eyes are a bit cloudy (typical for her age) but her teeth are in amazingly good shape with no gingival-hyperplasia (gum overgrowth). Rosie won the hearts of everyone at the vet hospital and everyone at NBR. She is very energetic, loves to cuddle, and showers all with the famous boxer kisses we all love and know well.
We were very fortunate to have found an available foster home for Rosie. She has acclimated very well to her foster family including the two older male boxers in the home. She has a bit more spunk than her foster brothers so the boys were a bit annoyed with her at first. However, it did not take long before everyone adjusted.
Rosie is a precious girl that deserves to live her remaining years living like a Queen.
