Marina's Information:

Marina is the “U” foster dog for the BDRA beverage name game theme, so we chose the name of a mixed drink called “Ultra-Marine” and call her “Marina.” Marina was found on a busy highway in Tennessee, covered with fleas and ticks and dirt. It took many baths at her temporary BDRA foster home in Tennessee to get her clean. A fair amount of hair on her back was gone because of an allergic reaction. Since she has come to her Virginia BDRA foster home, and thanks to antibiotics and prednisone, her skin has improved and her hair is growing back. What we don’t know yet is if her skin reaction was due to the ticks and fleas, or if it is a seasonal allergic condition or chronic allergic condition. Marina has bilateral cataracts and the vet got no sign of a visual response from her. However, she gets around well in the house and rarely bumps into things so we think she can see a bit, although she will get herself stuck in a corner sometimes and can’t seem to find her way out. She is still hesitant on our two steps that go from our deck to the yard but will go up and down them when harnessed on a leash with encouragement (better up than down so far). She just had her tear ducts flushed and the constant tearing she was experiencing is gone. She can hear well and knows her new name. She also has an umbilical hernia about the diameter of a golf ball on her tummy. The vet said it does not need to be removed unless it causes her pain or begins to grow. She came to us over 16 pounds and now is getting closer to 14 pounds as this is the weight the vet feels would be good for her frame. She is a good eater and just had a dental so her teeth are clean – and she still has all her teeth, even though she is a senior dog. She gets excited when meals are being prepared and will even jump up sometimes although we are trying to discourage that behavior. Marina is one of the calmest, gentlest dogs around. She doesn’t flinch when given eye drops, allowed a haircut without reaction, and was very relaxed during her first extensive vet appointment. She has a lower than average heart rate which may help to explain her relaxed nature. She likes to nap but also enjoys a good belly rub and a short walk in the yard. Outside she has just begun to pick up her speed and will trot a little bit at times, especially if our other dogs are outside as she will want to follow them. She gets along with our other dogs, who are all small like she is, and has sniffed at our cat a few times and then walked on by. And she is housetrained and crate trained! She sleeps quietly all night and rarely barks during the day unless the other dogs start barking, and then she will chime in. Marina would make a wonderful addition to most any home where the family understands that she is in her “golden years.” It would be especially great if she were in a home with at least one other dog as we have seen our dogs inspire her to be more active and have more fun. Marina responds well to love and attention and has a lot of love to give.
