My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 11/2011

Aaron is a very sweet young boy who was found as a stray running around the grounds of the Aaron Oil Company in AL. We don’t know for sure how 1 year old Aaron became a stray but we can only guess that he was dumped by former owners when they discovered his medical condition that would require extensive corrective care. Sweet Aaron was born with a congenital defect called a liver shunt. In a normal dog, food and other ingested materials are digested in the intestines and absorbed into the blood stream where they are carried to the liver. The liver stores some of the food for energy and uses some of it to make proteins and other substances. In dogs with shunts, the blood bypasses the liver and toxins build up in the bloodstream and/or kidneys. Additionally, the dog lacks the necessary materials to give it a ready source of energy and to help it grow. Thus, Aaron’s growth had been dwarfed and although he is close to a year old, he is only about the size of a 5 month old Golden Retriever and will remain diminutive.

In addition to his liver shunt, Aaron was heartworm positive when he came to SGRR. Other rescues might have put Aaron to sleep due to the financial weight of his care, but SGRR has never been the kind of rescue that turns its back on dogs when they are in the most need of help. Aaron is as sweet as Goldens come. He loves everyone and every creature he meets. He has a passion for just being alive and SGRR has done everything possible so Aaron can stay that way - alive.

Aaron’s surgery to correct the liver shunt went wonderfully and he is living with a wonderful foster family in AL with 5 other dogs. Linda, his foster mom, says that Aaron is always smiling a big Golden smile and is just so thrilled to be feeling well. She said he has the most adorable habit of spinning in circles to show his happiness!

Aaron is ready to travel north and be adopted by his forever family. He knows they are out there and he just waiting for them to find him. When Aaron is adopted, he will need to take Ivermectin and follow the effective regime of slow kill treatment for the heartworms. With all that Aaron has been through is his short life; he surely deserves a place to lay his sweet little head and know he will be forever cared for and loved. If you can offer Aaron that little extra TCL, please fill out an application so he can head HOME!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog - make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
