My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Seniors for Seniors Candidate

Chloe is an eight year old “special needs” Rat Terrier who, despite being deaf and blind, is incredibly independent, chipper, and full of life! Chloe was born deaf, and gradually lost her sight about 2-3 years ago, due to inoperable cataracts. She has learned to compensate for her hearing and vision losses by using her finely attuned senses of smell and touch. Chloe navigates through her surroundings fearlessly, turning her head this way and that way, sniffing and feeling out a course. Within hours after being introduced to her new foster home she was walking up and down stairs, jumping onto sofas & beds, and licking her fosterMom and Dad furiously. She is confident, very sweet and has a wonderful personality. Quite honestly, she seems not at all concerned that she cannot see or hear. Her upbeat attitude towards life should be a lesson to us all. Chloe currently resides in a foster home with several other dogs. She doesn't play (because of her vision loss), but she gets along fine with all of them. Chloe is perfectly fine on her own for extended periods of time, and on returning home after work her foster parents usually find Chloe on her blanket on the sofa, sleeping peacefully. She is completely house trained and does not chew. Chloe can not be kept in a crate because, being blind, she does not understand the concept and quickly gets confused and agitated. At night Chloe likes to sleep on the bed with her owners. Chloe will surprise you because she does not require constant attention. She is a very content, sweet dog who enjoys sitting peacefully on the sofa next to you, getting belly rubs, walking on a leash, and ripping the cover off of old tennis balls. Chloe can quickly become familiar with the layout of her house or fenced-in backyard, and is fine walking about on her own for extended periods of time. Chloe lost her vision when she was about five years old due to cataracts, and later developed glaucoma. Because the glaucoma was only partially controlled by topical eye drops, Chloe had surgery in December (2011) to remove the tissues inside her eyes and replace them with prosthetic silicon balls. The surgery was very successful, and she is doing and looking great! Chloe is currently on postoperative anti-inflammatory eyedrops that cost about $27 a month. Otherwise, Chloe is healthy, physically fit, genuinely very happy, and will be a sweet addition to any home!
