My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Looking for a sweet, classic sheepdog to make your life complete? Meet Max! This charming tricolor is both playful and athletic AND a bigtime cuddler. Originally adopted from WBCR in early 2009, with the unexpected change of jobs and the arrival of two kids, his adopters feel like Max deserves more than they can give him. At about 4 years old, filled with potential and as bright as they come, Max is now looking for a family to call his own.

This handsome BC/Aussie mix is a social boy, and once he feels comfortable in his surroundings, he really enjoys meeting new people. He will bond strongly with his human family and friends, and loves to be a part of things – he follows his people around the house, sleeping at their feet or nearby. Although he’s not a fetcher (yet), Max likes to wrestle and play tug of war with his people, and especially loves to head out on any and all outdoor adventures! Walks, runs, hikes, you name it, this boy is up for it! He LOVES being outdoors. Max also really loves to horse around with his canine buddies. He does well with some other dogs, depends on the dog – he is super playful with some, yet intimidated by others and understandably gets defensive if he feels threatened. Max has many traits typical of sheepdogs – he is very aware of his environment and sensitive to movement, and will react to things like skateboarders. He is also sensitive to noises, and is frightened by fireworks and thunder. Given his tendencies, Max is probably not suitable to a home with young children. And like almost all Border Collies, if not given direction, guidelines, and sufficient outlets for his energy and mind, Max will find his own fun. He will jump fences and has even learned to climb trees (!!!) – yes, you read that right! He is athletic and physically confident and we think he would excel in agility. Max is a fairly high energy guy who needs a good chunk of vigorous physical exercise daily to be happiest and at his best, in conjunction with sufficient mental stimulation. Once his needs are met, Max has a great off switch, and he is delightfully easy in the house..

And a brighter boy would be hard to find! Max will no doubt soak up all the lessons you want to teach him. He does already have some of the basics down – he’s house-trained and can sit and lie down – but will really be a far more enjoyable companion with a few more skills. Like many dogs, when on leash Max is very excited to meet other dogs which often escalates into frustrated barking and lunging - he will definitely need work in this department, but by showing him what to do instead (sit) and rewarding him for it, Max should learn fairly quickly how to behave. Max is terribly bright and will thrive with adopters who have the time and energy to invest in offering him direction and guidelines, in addition to teaching him some more in the manners department. Max is of course a sensitive fellow who will do best in the hands of people who consistently use reward-based, gentle tactics. Although he’s a very healthy fellow, he does seem to have a
sensitive stomach, but he is doing well eating a diet designed for that.

All in all, Max is a terrific example of all we love about the breed and is sure to bring years of happiness to some lucky adopter. For a family that has time to invest in him and willingness to give him a little extra guidance, Max is sure to develop into a fine canine citizen and wonderful friend. If you are looking for a boy who loves to adventure by day and snuggle by night, Max may be the one for you!

Max is neutered, fully vacced and living in a loving home in the Denver, CO area.
