My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Wrapper was found on the street with a litter of puppies. Pups have been adopted. She would love to have an active family to do things with, although she also loves to just lay beside you and have her belly rubbed. She will gently paw at your arm if you try to take a break. This girl is a sweetie and gets along with everyone. Wrapper can be a bit of an escape artist so she needs to be in a well fenced area or on a leash when outside. Make her a loving part of your family today! (Her full story is below)

Wrapper's Story:

The Animal Control officer had expected the large black Lab to bolt and run as soon as her truck pulled up in the fast food parking lot. But this was a different kind of chase she had fallen into. As she followed the trotting female with her milk filled breasts swaying side to side under bony ribs it seemed as if she was being led by the dog, rather than chasing her?

The chase/lead, ended in an abandoned junk yard a block from the fast food restaurant. The momma dog crawled under a pile of rotting wooden pallets as the AC officer approached. The officer heard the whimpering of pups. Leary of being bitten by a protecting mother she cautiously approached the hole that had been dug under the pile of wood.

Two bright brown eyes met hers as she got on her hands and knees and stared into the dark hole. There was a rustling and then squealing, and distressful whimpering as the mother dog moved around in the dark hole. Suddenly Momma stepped from the hole a puppy dangling from her mouth. Surprised the Animal Control officer could only stare as the emaciated mother stepped forward and dropped a puppy at her feet and then stepped back, sat, and wagged her tail and pulled the corners of her mouth back in a grateful canine grin.

So the Chase/lead had turned out to be a lead, the Momma dog leading the officer to her litter of pups. Knowing she would be picked up, it was as if she understood that was the only way her babies could continue to eat. Five squealing, black and brown, pink nosed, eyes closed, little butterballs, were retrieved from the hole under the rotting wood, as the black bag of bones that was their mother stood quietly and watched the AC officer load the pups on the truck. When the last pup had been placed in the compartment the Lab stood up and walked to the door, then with a tail wag and a quick lick of the AC officers hand, she bounded into the metal box with her babies.

At the shelter she was placed in a run with her pups nursing, she was an excellent mother leaving her babies only as the shelter staff stepped in to feed or clean the area. She had a way of wrapping herself around whoever came to play with her babies, as if saying “Thanks for feeding us. They are yours to enjoy, but mine to watch over.” The staff began calling her Wrapper!

As the pups eyes opened and they started eating solid food, reality slammed itself into the run where Wrapper lay with her puppies. Homes for the pups had been easy to find but for the mother, for Wrapper the ending was not going to be so happy. The staff knew time would soon be up for this devoted mother Lab, and though they had found homes for the babies, Wrapper would soon be scheduled for execution. She seemed to know the game but had chosen to give up herself to have her babies live.

Tina stopped by my kennel one day as I was setting up an agility course for what I hoped would be the first Rescue Kennel Club show. She told me the story of Wrapper and I knew what was coming. I didn’t know where she would stay, I didn’t know where the food would come from but I knew this mother dog would have to have second chance. The same chance she had given those babies.

So Wrapper now lives in the kennel here at K9 Kountry waiting for that forever home. Will it ever come? You all know the odds, but at least she has a chance. And I think that is all she ever wanted, for her babies or for herself.
