My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Just before Thanksgiving, a hunky Golden guy was found running around in Trenton, NJ. When you meet this fellow, you have to wonder how no one came looking for him. The shelter staff named this dog “Billy” but we have dubbed him “Billy Bear” because he so resembles a giant teddy bear! Billy is about 1-2 years old and is a big blocky Golden, weighing 90 pounds. He has a huge head, massive paws, and enormous enthusiasm! Presently, Billy’s shiny red coat is on the shorter side for a Golden Retriever - He may have been shaved or it could be that he is a younger dog whose adult coat is still coming in.

Billy is scared in his kennel at the animal shelter but once he is out in a larger run, he is as sweet as can be. A volunteer at the shelter who works closely with Billy commented on what a great dog he is. She said that she can tell him to "sit and stay" and will walk away from him, going out of his line of sight - Billy will stay put until she calls him to come. (It appears that someone took a great deal of time with him to train him to sit and stay as well as he does!) Billy is very fond of Amy and will stand on his hind legs to peer over the barrier of his kennel to watch her when she is tending to the other animals. Billy is very people oriented and is even good with Amy’s 9 year old daughter. Like most young dogs in need of training, he's a bit mouthy and jumpy, but he corrects easily. Even when he gets crazy, he will respond to a stern "sit." Billy is a dog that would benefit from obedience training to fine tune whatever training had been done by his former owner.

Billy showed little interest in toys, but SGRR’s volunteer was able to take the toy he didn't really want out of his mouth. He took small treats from the volunteer’s hand gently. Our volunteer could touch Billy Bear’s ears, his tail, check his teeth, etc. without any complaining by him. Amy brought over a small nicely mannered pit bull to the run to see Billy's reaction and Billy immediately went into play-bow mode.

Billy will be heading to a foster home in NH where we will get to know more about him. Thus far, we know that he will need a strong owner who will keep Billy exercised -physically and mentally. We see his owner as someone active and in charge, who is home more often than not, who can dedicate time to his training, and tap into Billy's true potential. Because of Billy’s size and zest for life, we will not be placing him in a home with very young children who might be easily knocked over. If you are interested in Billy Bear, be sure to apply soon – he is ready to grab his leash and go home again! APPLY ON-LINE TO ADOPT

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
