Alfie's Story...
It is hard not to fall in love with Alphie! He is just an adorably sweet dog, with an adorable disposition that wants nothing more than to be with his person and be loved. His foster mom was seriously considering adopting Alphie but as she loves to walk in the forest, Alfie is just too tiny. Alfie is really a companion dog that would do well in just about any environment where he got attention. He is an adult dog and weighs just under 9 lbs.

His foster mom didn't send in many pictures of Alfie but you don't need much to see that this little boy is a doll. Of course with his long, luxurious coat he will need some extra care and brushing. He doesn't shed and could very well be a purebred Havanese. We have no idea how this beautiful little boy would have come to find himself in a kill shelter but we would imagine that it was through a death in the family or some other drastic situation. He was obviously someone's pet as he is well behaved, fully trained and can even do some tricks.

Havanese are natural companion dogs: gentle and responsive. They become very attached to their human families and are excellent with children. Very affectionate and playful with a high degree of intelligence. These cheerful dogs are very sociable and will get along with everyone including people, dogs, cats and other pets. They are easy to obedience train and get along well with other dogs. This curious dog loves to observe what is going on. They are sensitive to the tone of one's voice and will not respond well to harsh discipline. The Havanese have a long reputation of being circus dogs, probably because it learns quickly and enjoys doing things for people. It is not their nature to bark a lot. Havanese are good watch dogs - making sure to alert you when a visitor arrives, but will quickly welcome the guest once it sees you welcome them.

This is a very healthy long-lived breed. They live to about 14-15 years. Alfie would be fine for apartment life. He is very active indoors and will do okay without a yard however Alfie is a playful little dog has an average demand for exercise. He would still very much enjoy a daily walk.

Alfie's coat can be clipped short for easier care. If the coat is to be kept long it needs to be thoroughly brushed and combed at least twice a week. There is little to no shedding, so dead hair must be removed by brushing. The beauty of a well groomed Havanese is that he still looks tousled and carefree. This breed is good for allergy sufferers. They are a non-shedding- hypo allergenic dog.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Alfie, a Hamilton Havanese dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Havanese for sale in Hamilton, or seeking a Havanese dog from a breeder in Hamilton.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Hamilton already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Hamilton breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Havanese breeders who help with Havanese rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Hamilton paves the way for another one to be saved.
