My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Colleen was rescued from a high-kill shelter just before Christmas when many animals are euthanized in order to empty the pens for the holidays. Her self esteem is high and she confidently meets new people and other pets. She especially loves large men with caps and beards, something that frightens many dogs. She seems to approach everyone with joy and frankness. There are no children here to evaluate her kid-ometer but seeing how submissive and happy she is around adults, I would expect her to be patient with children. She clearly was someone's beloved pet and we'll never know how she ended up so close to being put down.

She is probably 4-5 years old and in excellent health, seeming to have been well cared for all her life. Her teeth are beautiful and she doesn't have bad breath, making me think someone even took good care of her teeth. She is completely trusting of people and walks happily on a leash, however she will joyfully run off if she escapes, which may be how she lost her first home.

I brought her home to foster for a few days and test her house manners, which turned out to be impeccable. She sleeps all night in her crate and promptly relieves herself when taken out. She doesn't whine if she is on the wrong side of a door or fence or in the crate, even though she clearly prefers to be where the family is.

She loves my cat, making me think she has a close bond with one at her previous home. However a cat who is not dog savvy make take offense at her trying to clean his ears or wash his face with her tongue.

While romping with my other dogs in a pasture fenced just for them, she managed to walk under a gate and was a challenge to coax back. I found the best way to get her back was to leave my door open with some cat food just inside. I think once she has a home of her own and knows where she is supposed to be this will cease to be an issue, but for starters I'd keep her well fenced or just take her outdoors on a leash. She loves being an inside dog and adores a leash walk so could be happy like that the rest of her life.
