My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Kirby came from a puppy mill/breeder release situation while he was still in his mom’s belly. He was well socialized and loved as a puppy but was bounced around his first year. Kirby is currently in his fourth home (his foster home). Kirby has some classic chihuahua behaviors that need work but he makes up for it in pure love and cuddles. The reason Kirby was bounced around so much is his classic small male dog behavior of marking. This behavior has been amplified by living in a foster home with three other male dogs.

Kirby is very affectionate and cuddly to his people. He LOVES to be held and will lay on his back like a baby. Kirby has too much experience with strangers entering his home and taking him away. It has already happened three times to him. Because of this, he acts very fearful and barks aggressively with visitors and has bitten. As time goes on in his foster home, he is losing this reaction but it will still take some time. If you are willing to be patient with him he will make up for it in true love and devotion to his guardian. Because he has bitten we are looking for a home without children.

Kirby struggles with his doggie manners when meeting other dogs. It is extremely challenging to introduce him to a new dog. However, he gets along well once he’s no longer fearful of them and considers them part of his pack. He is currently living with six dogs and he does well in his pack.

Because of Kirby’s bad luck in finding the right fit thus far, we are looking for the perfect home for him. He will require some time to get to know his new family with a few visits prior to going to his new home. His new family will have to realize he will not warm up to them on the first visit. Letting him get to know his new family well before he "moves in" should ease any feelings of abandonment, stranger anxiety and separation anxiety in the future.

If you would like to meet him, please fill out an application. He knows how to use a doggie door, he is neutered and micro chipped. He was born June 1, 2010 and he weighs 10 pounds. He has been in his foster home since his first birthday. $125 to a wonderful home.

Home visits and references are required on all adoptions.
