My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Artie - formerly King Arthur, is a petite mantle with cropped and sometimes standing ears. He came into rescue just 2 months shy of his 9th birthday due to a divorce and the family losing their home. Artie spent 3 weeks in a garage and also lost his 17 year old Dachshund sleeping buddy at the same time. Consequently he is thin, and has lost some of the muscle in his back legs. Artie is very active and playful for his age and loves to play with toys, go for walks and rides great in the car. He’s good with kids and dogs, but will chase cats. Artie loves to snuggle. He’s been doing great in light of all the recent changes in his life. He’s not thrilled with hardwood floors. Partly because he’s not used to not having any traction, but with the loss of muscle in his rear end he sometimes slips. Artie lifts his back legs up when he walks and when he puts them down on the hardwood floor it sounds like he’s marching. With ready access to a backyard, Artie is trustworthy in the house and has shown no interest in chewing. Artie has been neutered and brought up to date on his shots and he’d love to spend his senior years in a carpeted forever home. During his neuter, two growths were removed. One on his back toe was a benign fibroma, but one on his ear was a grade II mast cell tumor. The biopsy said the tumor had clean margins and consequently the entire tumor has been removed. Artie continues to do well. He loves squeaky toys and is an early riser. He is gradually putting on weight and enjoys running in the backyard with the Big Dogs. Artie came to MAGDRL in September 2011.

Update 3/3/12 - Artie has settled in and gotten into a routine. He goes to bed around 8pm, wakes us up between 1 and 3am to go pee and gets up again at 5am to go back out and have breakfast. One of us takes the night time break and the other gets the early morning one. For the early one, we admit to being lazy and after he pees, just giving him a bit of dry food and coaxing him back to sleep for another hour when we get up and give him breakfast with our other 2 Danes. Consequently, we’ve come to think of him as a Hobbit. He’s small, has furry toes and gets first and second breakfast. Since Artie isn’t crate trained and has a teeny tiny bladder we have the pet sitter come by 3 times a day and belly band him when we leave the house. We’re still fine tuning the routine, but it seems he can’t hold it longer than 3 hours. Artie has filled in so you can’t see his spine or his ribs, but I suspect with his high energy level, we won’t have much trouble keeping him slim. He loves to run and play with our female Dane and to run up and down the fence barking at the horses. He has developed a bit more muscle, but I don’t think he’ll ever build up all the muscle you normally see on the back legs of a Dane. Artie has also gotten a new growth since he had the last one removed. The new one is on his right flank and is currently the size of a pea. The vet has looked at it and asked us to bring him back when it gets to nickel size.
