Update from foster mom (5/2/12):

I am Jazz's foster mom, and can give you a few more details about her since she has been with us (mid-March). She is a smart, happy, loving terrier mix.

She was afraid of everything when we got her. I think our urban neighborhood was very different from what she was used to. On walks she would shake, cower and try to run away whenever a car or truck went by (all the time at our house). I spoke to a trainer and he taught me how to desensitize her, so now she is fine, though she still won't go near a manhole cover or storm drain.

She is very high energy, so we take her two or three times a day to a local off leash park. At first, she was so fearful and poorly socialized but she is getting much better.

Her foster mom has taught her to fetch (in about 10 seconds). She LOVES to fetch and is very fast, and would rather fetch than play with the other dogs. Recently she has begun participating In group play. She always has her ball in her mouth. She even has started playing a little without the ball and without incident. My husband and I each have a chuck-it. As soon as she releases one ball, the other person throws the next. She will do this for an hour and she still wants more, but after an hour she is a little slower!

She comes home, gobbles up some water, and flops down for a long nap. At night she sleeps either with the kids or us . She is very cute and often sleeps on her back with her paws out. She is ok in her crate.

WE are not sure how she would be if she lived with cats. Her foster mom does have a cat and even though Jaz has not gone after the cat, she is never left alone with the cat, so it may be best that Jaz go to a home without cats. We think Jaz would do best as an only dog, unless an experienced owner was willing to work with her socialization skills.

Prior bio:

Jaz is a 40 pound, 2 year old boston/jack russell terrier mix female, who was dumped at the shelter by her owner along with her 3 small babies. The babies did not survive the shelter environment and poor Jaz was left all alone.

She is such a sweet, loving, young girl herself and a kind lady offered to foster her. Now she is living with a family and is so very grateful.

She has already learned to sit on command, knows what a treat is (sits every time), and is housebroken. She likes to go for walks and handles very well on a leash. She is also content to lounge on the sofa with her family. She sleeps undisturbed at night on her doggy bed.

Jaz has been spayed and is up to date on vaccines and microchipped. Jaz was successfully treated for heartworms and she is healthy and ready for her new home. If you would like to know more about Jaz, her foster mom is happy to talk with you. As you can see from her pictures, she is an excellent family pet and would love the chance to find a family who will never abandon her again.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN JAZ.

Adoption Donation: $450.00

http://www.pawsnewengland.com/adoption-form/

The adoption donation covers all pre-adoption vet costs (age appropriate vaccinations, spaying/neutering -when age appropriate- heartworm testing/treatment when necessary and includes transportation to New England at $140.00 per dog.

In addition, PAWS NEW ENGLAND has joined with VCA Veterinary Hospital to offer adopters an initial health consultation in New England at a VCA Hospital free of charge with treatment during the first seven days of adoption of common canine illnesses associated with these lucky pups, i.e. kennel cough, fecal parasites, etc. also free of charge.

UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED, ALL OF OUR DOGS ARE LOCATED OUTSIDE OF RHODE ISLAND BOARDED EITHER PRIVATE FOSTER HOMES OR TRAINING FACILITIES. If a dog is listed as "local", he /she is at one of our foster homes in New England.

We are often asked, ""Why would you charge ""so much"" for a rescue pet? Why not just place it in a good home?" The answer is because we need adopters who are willing to support all rescue pets, not just the dog they adopt. A young, healthy dog might cost us $150-400 in discounted vet care, and many people will want to adopt it; an older dog with health issues can easily cost $500-1500 in veterinary expenses, and it may require months of foster care for rehabilitation yet we can only ask a minimal adoption fee, and it may be a long time until anyone comes forward to adopt him/her. Fees from the younger, more adoptable dogs help offset the cost of caring for the others.

As most dogs do not walk into a shelter with their parents birth certificates in their mouths, we cannot verify the breed mix of any dog listed. ALL KNOWN INFORMATION IS LISTED HERE. We do our best to give accurate information, but most of our dogs are rescues and do not come with a known history or confirmation of breed mix.

Rescue Group Info...

About Our Rescue Group...
PAWS is comprised of a small group of volunteers from New England and Tennessee trying to reduce the euthanization rate (previously 90%) at the Tipton County Animal Control shelter in Brighton, Tennessee. This shelter is forced to euthanize thousands of animals each year due to irresponsible pet owners that do not spay/ neuter their dogs in the area. Millions of dogs in America are euthanized each year due to lack of space and lack of funding to try and find them better homes.

Our mission is to save as many animals as possible, removing them from the shelter, having their veterinary needs met prior to traveling and then finding them loving homes throughout New England. We do this only with the assistance of many people volunteering their time by going to the shelter, transporting the dogs to the vet, fostering dogs who need special care, and arranging for their new and happy homes in this area. Most importantly, we cannot do any of this without those people willing to open their homes and hearts to these lovely creatures.

Come Meet Our Pets...
All of our dogs are located either in foster homes in New England or Tennessee/Missouri. Please email our volunteers to ask about the specific pet that you are interested in.
