My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Bucky's the kind of dog that will tug at your heart a little every single time you look at him. Because most likely he'll be right there in front of you, looking adoringly right back at you, with a huge grin just because he's got you by his side. He's a cutie pie and he's got the gentle sweetness to match. Mild-mannered, calm, and oh so velcro-ey, he is the ideal dog to take with you everywhere.

Bucky was found as a stray, hair matted, broken teeth, injured paw, and a permanent cut in his tongue. Very submissive, he has a habit of dropping his hind legs to the ground in a half-down position whenever approached. He is friendly but hesitant when approached by strangers. It could be he was treated a bit harshly in his previous home or he learned to be a little cautious while living on the streets. He will do this submissive pose when you pick him up, but is totally fine with being handled.

Bucky really is a gentle soul. He has a little playful streak that takes a while to come out, and it is possible he may become more and more playful over time once as he learns to feel comfortable in his new home. But really he's a velcro dog. He just wants to be by your side always. He loves sharing your bed at nights as well--and he's not a hogger!

Bucky is completely calm when meeting new dogs, whether they are large or small. He's fine with cats as well. He's not big on playing but over time, his playful streak will come out more and more.

Because of his mild, somewhat shy nature, we think a home without small children would be ideal for Bucky. Fast, unexpected movements can startle him. He seems to bond more quickly to women than men, but that could be partly because his primary caregivers at the rescue have all been women. He is fine with men, though is more likely to be startled by them in the beginning because of their larger size.

Once Bucky becomes comfortable with you, you will be his shining star. Just a little attention from you will make his tail wag like crazy. He'll give you gentle kisses, and lots of it--seriously, lots! In his eyes, the sun and moon will rise with you.

**NOTE: Because he has such an extreme tendency to latch on to his person, Bucky may be more prone to SEPARATION ANXIETY if he is not taught to be comfortable with being alone from an early stage. He does *not* currently suffer from this anxiety, but it is possible it may develop if he doesn't receive the proper amount of practice with being without human contact.

A visit to the vet determined that Bucky had suffered some injuries while living on the street, including injuries to some of his teeth and his right front paw. These injuries required surgery, but Bucky has since made a full recovery. He is also current on his vaccinations, and has been microchipped, neutered, and tested negative for heart worm.

Bucky is young, between one and two years old, house trained, and we are currently working on basic commands such as sit, stay, etc.. Bucky is very good on leash and will walk at a near-perfect heel of his own volition. He is hesitant to get into the car, but once in there, rides very well in the car.

Bucky is *not* a yapper, but that's not to say he never barks. So far though, he doesn't seem to bark at strangers approaching the house or anything like that--mostly he only barks when he's separated from his human. It's not an incessant barking though, only enough to voice his displeasure or to remind you, "Hey, what about me?" and is quickly corrected with a water spray bottle.
We are not positive of his breed, but he is long-haired and will require regular grooming, especially if you want to keep his coat short and tidy. He was a trooper at the grooming salon, bestowing many kisses to his groomer.

Bucky is not a high energy dog, though he will run around the yard when first let outside, tail wagging the whole time. Bucky would be fine as an only dog or as a calm companion for another dog. If you’re looking for a mellow boy, Bucky just might be the dog for you.

Bucky is being fostered in SACRAMENTO. Please email to request an adoption application if you would like to meet with him there. There is a tax-deductible adoption fee of $285 which will help to cover his medical expenses. A homecheck will also be required. Bucky will be neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and heartworm tested negative prior to adoption.
