Written by Volunteer Gwen. I've just taken this sweet boy as a foster dog in July 2014, but I've known him all his life. In fact I named him and his litter mates. A realtor found the litter at an abandoned, foreclosed home. The mama dog was dead in the road. She asked CARE, Inc. to take them since we have no county shelter. In his two years growing up at CARE, Chaucer has developed into a solid, outgoing, well-behaved pooch.
Because of his good life at CARE, Inc.Chaucer has never felt abandoned or scared, which contributes to his stability. However he longs for a real home of his own with a real relationship. This became obvious the second day he was living as my foster dog. Instead of the merry little social butterfly I knew from my work at the kennel, he became a quiet, observant companion sitting by my feet as I worked in my office or following me out to the garden for chores.
Also because of the good food and regular vet checks at CARE,Inc. his bright eyes and shiny coat are good indicators that he is healthier than most rescue dogs.
Chaucer has the joyful energy of his terrier ancestors but the laid back personality of his beagle side. Alert and curious, but not yappy, he is happy wherever life takes him. He loves everyone he meets, even large men in boots and beards. He has had dozens of pen mates in his short life so he knows every courtesy one dog can teach another. He is housebroken, loves to sleep in a crate, doesn't whine at being in a strange place. He barked once at my old cat but stopped when I showed disapproval.
