Born in 2008, Tobler is an FIV+ cat admitted to Tree House as part of our TNR program. His caregiver discovered that the friendly guy had an injured eye that routinely became infected. He was diagnosed with an entropion lower eyelid which causes the eyelashes and fur to turn under and rub against the cornea, possibly causing scratches, ulcers, scars and infection. He underwent corrective surgery and no further problems are expected with his eye. Tobler is very affectionate and loves to engage his feline friends in rollicking games of chase.
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) causes a weakening of the immune system in cats. It's often compared to human HIV, but FIV is not transferable to humans or other species. It is also difficult to transfer to other sterilized cats, and we believe that mixed FIV and non-FIV households can work if managed properly. If kept indoors in a stress-free environment, with regular medical care and high-quality nutrition, most FIV+ cats live long and healthy lives.
