Isamu's Info...

Isamu's Story...
Isamu (ee-sah-moo), which means "courage or bravery", is a 1-2 year old neutered male Shiba Inu, possibly mixed with Basenji, that came to us from a high kill shelter in Kansas City Missouri. Isa is a very energetic boy and is looking for a forever home that can give him the same amounts of energy and affection that he can give back.

Isamu is good in his crate and is currently walked for most of his potty breaks so he would be a good candidate for apartment living. Should he be adopted to a home with a yard, he needs at least a 6 foot wood privacy fence, if not HIGHER, as he can get over 5 foot fences.

Isamu is good with people and older children (we have not had the opportunity to have him around small children but do believe he would do well). However Isa is not good with most other dogs and would do best as the only dog in the home. The only dog he seems to ignore and do well with is the director's female Shih tzu. Because of these lacking social skills, Isa also should be kept at a distance from other dogs when on leash as he will lunge out at other dogs. His foster dad is working on giving him very high value treats whenever Isa looks at a dog without reacting and gives his foster dad eye contact instead. Isa is also not good with cats or small animals.

Here is an update from Isamu's foster dad after working with our director in mid-November:

"The training lesson I received from you has been a huge help. His aggression has gone down quite a bit from before. I've been taking him on walks with a friend of mine that walks dogs for a living. He has had the opportunity to be around a few different dogs in the last week. His aggression comes out towards some dogs more than others. He is most aggressive towards high energy, playful pups and small dogs. He can stay in the same room as a mellow dog without any problems, unless there is food, water or a toy around. He is getting to the point where he can walk past dogs on the street and I can keep his focus. This will take quite a bit more time for him to perfect though.

I took him down to my parents house for the holiday and he really became a perfect pup. They live in the mountains and have a large peaceful property. He didn't try to escape once and really calmed down a lot. I was truly amazed at how good he was the whole time we were there."

Isamu's adoption fee is $300 which includes his neuter, microchip, deworming, distemper and rabies vaccinations, and he will receive a professional training course following his adoption.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Isamu, a Longmont Shiba Inu/Basenji dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Shiba Inu/Basenji for sale in Longmont, or seeking a Shiba Inu/Basenji dog from a breeder in Longmont.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Longmont already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Longmont breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Shiba Inu/Basenji breeders who help with Shiba Inu/Basenji rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Longmont paves the way for another one to be saved.
