My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Clearly one year old, 10 lb,Tommy is not a dog you expect to see in dachshund rescue even if the shelter did label him a doxie mix. Numerous pleas to save this dog crossed his foster mom’s desk. Then one last ditch plea was sent along with a youtube video. His foster mom already was drawn to Tommy because he looked just like one of her senior dogs. Then she clicked on the video link. Tommy had such a bad case of demodex mange, it was clear he had probably had it since a very young puppy. And even though he most likely did not remember what it was like to not be in pain, there he was in the video, full of not just energy and enthusiasm but also sheer joy. His foster mom decided that sometimes a dog that has never ever had a break, should get one and so Tommy was saved.

Tommy was all wiggles and kisses from the moment he got to his foster home. When he arrived, the German army was lined up at the gate barking and posturing and letting Tommy know this was their turf. Tommy trotted over to the fence and at each dog, regardless of their behavior towards him, he gave a fast tail wag and a howdy. You could almost hear him saying “Hi ’I’m Tommy. Do you like to play?” “Good to meet you buddy. Let’s be friends.” “Hi, Isn’t life grand?” He moved down the line of doxies like a General reviewing his troops, making friends with them all.

Upon arrival, where Tommy was missing hair, his skin was thick and rubbery. He had large red infected areas on his flanks. His chest was bald, covered with red bumps and hot to the touch. We immediately began treatment which included antibiotics and dips. (Demodex mange is not contagious and is most common in puppies that are in unhealthy and stressful living environments). He has now finished his treatment and has a beautiful new coat. (To see how bad he was - the last picture with his red, white & blue toy was taken mid-treatment, the others show his new, "hairy" look)

Tommy has an incredible zest for life. He is the happiest dog we have ever known. He likes people and he likes dogs. He has lots of energy and runs for miles when he goes to the beach. He loves stuffed squeaky toys and unlike his doxie cousins, he doesn’t destroy them. (Alas, he doesn’t have many such toys as they don’t survive the dachshunds). He has gotten even the most aloof doxies to play and wrestle with him. He is a clown that always makes visitors laugh.

This special boy is crate trained and puts himself to bed at night. He is neutered, micro chipped and current on his vaccinations.
