My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

If you are in need of a very loyal little friend, greetings, I am Winston. I am told that I am just the cutest little thing to come along in a long time. I am now learning to deal with two very bossy diva foster sisters (who are Shelties like me) and some cats, but we all get along really well. It would be more fun, however, if the cats would run every now and again - oh a good chase would be so great!

AGE: 8 years
SIZE: ~15 inches tall and weighs 24 lbs. Winston needs to lose a few pounds to get to a healthier weight.
TEMPERAMENT: Winston is a mellow fellow most of the time. He does prefer to be in the front line at meal time and the other dogs respect that.
DOGS: Winston has tried to play with Casey (resident female Sheltie) by running around her and barking, but of course she thinks that is child's play. He would do well with perhaps another companion about his same age or size, or could be someone's one & only if they have plenty of time to spend with him. He likes to visit with the neighbor's Min Pin, maybe is trying to figure out just what it is at times, as she just won't stay in one place very long.
CATS: Winston does fine with the cats in his foster home.
KIDS: Winston does not seem comfortable around children, especially younger children, and will try to move away if possible. He will need a home without children, or with children ages 10+.
FENCE: Winston needs a secure wood, chain link or vinyl fence, with secure gates and direct access from the house. He likes to be able to come in and out on his own, and he needs a home with a grassy yard.
HOUSE-TRAINED: Yes.
BARKING: Winston will bark mainly just to get your attention or if the other Shelties are sounding the alarm.
OBEDIENCE TRAINING: Unknown if Winston has had any formal training. He responds to sit and stay.
LEASH MANNERS: Winston walks very well on a leash. He likes shorter walks at a leisurely pace and he prefers to walk on grass.
CAR RIDES: Winston rides perfectly and calmly in the car, secured with a doggie seatbelt.
HEALTH ISSUES: Winston is on a low cost thyroid medication (common in Shelties) and takes Rimadyl due to a deformity in his front feet that may have been the result of a birth defect. Winston has no trouble with steps. He will need a home with carpet or lots of area rugs, and a grassy yard.

Winston is a very sweet, gentle little boy who will be a wonderful companion for that lucky someone. He is kind of shy until he gets to know everyone, but then is a real charmer! From his foster mom: this little guy is so happy now, so know he is feeling so good now.

Please read our adoption guidelines at http://www.mnsheltierescue.org/howtoadopt prior to calling or emailing us, as this may answer your questions.

***The Sheltie's bio explains the type of home that will best meet that Sheltie's needs, and indicates if a fence is required, and whether the Sheltie can be placed with children, dogs or cats. Please note that we cannot guarantee the availability of the Shelties in our program, and that our priority is to meet the needs of the Shelties in our care.***

Winston's adoption fee is $250.00, and he is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested and on heartworm preventative (during heartworm season), had a dental, is microchipped, has been bathed and brushed, etc. All of our dogs are indoor dogs and are not to be left outside unattended (not even in a fenced yard, if the adopter is not at home).
