My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Poor nine year old Spike lived his life as a yard dog until his people decided to dump him in a shelter. For Spike this may have been the luckiest day of his life as from there he made his way into rescue.

When Spike arrived in his foster home he "snuck" into a blanket lined crate and tried his best to be invisible so he wouldn't get kicked outside. He kept this up for a week before realizing that even if his foster mom saw him, he still got to stay in the house.

At first, Spike never looked up at his foster mom as he had learned to expect nothing from humans. We are slowly working on changing his expectations. Spike now gets very excited when his foster mom comes home and will jump up for some petting. He also likes sitting in laps but is still cautious about having more than his head stroked. (It's really heartbreaking how little faith he has in people).

Spike does have some food aggression. We would recommend hand feeding him for awhile (which is almost impossible to do in his foster home due to the number of dogs).

Spike loves going on walks and while we think these are a new concept for him, he behaves very nicely on them.

He needs a new owner that will give him some space the first few days until he feels safe and can relax. Treats and walks will help this along.

Spike has a half tail. We are not sure if he lost part of it in an accident or if he were born that way. We are happy to report that he now has started to wag it! Spike also has slightly longer legs so a home with stairs would not be an issue for him.

If you are interested in Spike please fill out the online adoption application at www.scdr.org and email Lindy at linla@comcast.net

Spike's adoption fee is a tax deductible $75.
