I am already spayed, housetrained, up to date with shots, good with kids, good with dogs, and not good with cats.
This beautiful girl is Holly. She is very sweet, laid-back and has such expressive eyes they can talk you into almost anything. Holly is housetrained and crate trained but isn't a fan of the crate. She's a good girl in the house so her foster parents leave her out when they're gone. She doesn't particularly care for cats and she'd do best in a home with older children. She's a mellow girl with a shy streak and prefers a calm house without a lot of commotion. She really loves other dogs, she shares her foster home with quite a few and she asked us to make sure her forever home has at least one dog. She thrives around other dogs, especially the dogs in her foster home and she has a great time at doggie daycare. Sometimes she'll play with the dogs there, other times she's happy just watching them all play. On sunny days, you can find her in the brightest spot, enjoying the warm feeling of the sun. Holly sleeps on a dog bed but told us she would just love a home where she could sleep in a bed with her people. She loves to snuggle and feels the bed is the best place for a snugglefest. Holly is very happy when her foster parents come home from work and loves greeting them, and anyone else, who comes to the door. She likes to be around her people and is happy just being in the room with them. She likes to chew on toys and enjoys chasing balls and she'll even bring them back to you! She's a pretty, smart girl who loves treats of all kind and she's very food motivated which makes training her fun & easy. Holly knows sit, down, wait, and up, which means get in the car or up on the bed. The dogs in her house are trained to wait before they eat and are released with the word 'free' and Holly caught on quickly. Her foster parents are thinking about starting her in agility training soon because she's so agile and very good at climbing. She has fun going for car rides and is a good girl in the car. She also loves going for walks and is amazing on a leash, never pulling or tugging. Holly's foster parents enjoy taking her on outings with them and socializing her. She likes going to PetsMart, where she's very well-behaved. One of her favorite places to go is the dog park where she loves to run & wrestle with the other dogs and her foster siblings. Holly can be a silly girl and makes her foster mom laugh a lot, especially when she pounces & prances around like a deer. Sometimes this goofy girl tries to groom her foster mom, nibbling on her shirt sleeve or pant leg like she's eating corn on the cob! This precious girl is going to make her new family very happy!! Rescue Group Info...
Gateway Pet Guardians is dedicated to rescuing homeless pets in the St. Louis area, getting them great veterinary care, and finding them forever homes. We are currently a virtual shelter with all of our pets waiting for adoption in the care of volunteer foster families, however we are working toward a facility.
Gateway Pet Guardians is a 501c(3) tax-exempt organization. Donations are always greatly appreciated and are used to provide veterinary care for our foster pets, some of whom have been badly injured by automobile accidents, cruelty, neglect, or life on the street.
Follow us on Facebook and join our mailing list to be updated about adoption events.

Once you find an animal that you are interested in, email us and we will send your information to the foster family. You will fill out an adoption application and provide us with references. Once we have reviewed the application and contacted your references, we set up a home visit. Adoption fees are $150 for adult dogs and $195 for puppies. This fee includes shots, a spay/neuter and microchipping, as well as any other treatment the animal may have needed upon being rescued from the streets.
PJ Hightower started feeding dogs in East St. Louis, a very impoverished neighborhood in Illinois, in 1995 on her way to her sister's house. She began going on a regular basis from there and has not missed one single day since 2001. The dogs rely on PJ, waiting for her car every morning. They come running at its sound and most come straight up to her car door as she stops. She not only feeds, but medicates, domesticates and rescues when we have a home that will take one in.
A small group of people decided to form Gateway Pet Guardians around PJ's efforts in 2004. Gateway is fast growing and excited about what the future holds for the stray dogs of the East side. Or hopefully lack there of.
When we pull a dog, we give it veterinary care and put it in a foster home where it can learn to live as a dog should live and be loved. We find that with our "virtual" shelter system, the dogs tend to have better outcomes in their forever homes. Although we are saving to build a shelter, we still plan to keep our dogs in foster homes as often as possible.
We are a small group of people devoted to solving the homeless dog population in East St. Louis through education/outreach and spay/neuter programs. We would love your involvement!
