Meet Maple Sugar, T.A.R.A.’s resident couch potato. This big girl is a champion at two things- lounging and loving. She lives at our boarding facility where she spends her days basking in the sunlight, napping, or chewing on her toys. Maple Sugar is a very special mix of two dog breeds: a Catahoula Leopard Hound and an American Bulldog. People liked this combo so much that they created a “breed” called a Catahoula Bulldog. The best qualities of these dogs are their loyalty to humans and their eagerness to learn and please their owners. Another quality that T.A.R.A. volunteers love about Maple Sugar is her coloring! Her pattern is called Red Merle. This color is what gave her one beautiful blue eye, too! Maple Sugar is one of the prettiest dogs around and she knows it!
Maple Sugar is picky about what dogs she likes to socialize with, but she does develop great friendships with certain dogs. She doesn’t seem to see a difference between a squirrel and a cat, so it would be best for her to live in a feline-free zone. She is truly happy to spend most of her day lazing around and would enjoy a laid back companion or family even if they’re not very active. As an adult dog, Maple Sugar is house trained and knows that it is only okay to chew on toys and chewy treats. TARA's adoption fee includes: spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations, microchip, heartworm test and prevention (if age appropriate), flea prevention and deworming. TARA's pets are all eligible for a two week trial.
Due to the fact that many of our dogs come from the local city shelters, we do not know the background of many of them and therefore cannot always guarantee age or breed. Size is subjective but we use the following guidelines: Small 1-20 pounds, Med 20-50 pounds, Large 50-80 pounds, Extra Large over 80 pounds.

The first step to adopt any of our animals is to fill out the online application. This is normally followed up with a meeting for you and the animal and a home visit. Adoption fees range from $65 to $250.
We serve the Greater Kansas City Metro area on both the Missouri and Kansas sides of the state line. We evaluate out of town applications on an individual basis.
