My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Bernie's elderly person became unable to care for him and Bernie was taken to the pound. The Dixie Pet Underground Railroad was able to get him to safety and now he is looking for a forever home. Bernie wins the award for super cuddler! His favorite past-time in the whole world is to lay in your lap like a baby and snuggle in for a snooze. He's very affectionate and gives the sweetest kisses. But don't think he's about snuggling all the time! Show him a tennis ball and he's off to chase it and return it ... almost every time. He's very well-behaved and will sit for treats. He is loyal to a fault and will follow his person everywhere. When meeting new people, Bernie can be a bit shy and slow to warm up. He's the same with other dogs. He loves his "pack," but can be slow to accept new dogs. He's perfectly cat friendly. He is not destructive and can be trusted when left alone. Even though Bernie will be a great family dog, he will probably always remain closest to one the one person he chooses as his own. Just a little more than 10 pounds, Bernie's the perfect lap warmer. He comes with a built-in alarm system for when strangers enter and a built-in therapy system for when you're down. Give Bernie a day or two, and he'll steal your heart forever!

PLEASE you must click the following link in order to read about our process and to apply for this dog: http://members.petfinder.org/~TN564/IntroductionD.htm

Or e-mail adoptions@dixiepetunderground.org to request an adoption application.

Once we receive your complete application, an adoption counselor will call you within 48 hours of receipt of the application. During the adoption interview, the adoption counselor will tell you more about the puppy and our adoption processes, as well as answer any questions you have.

Dogs and puppies are up-to-date on their vaccinations, spayed/neutered, de-wormed, treated for fleas/ticks and heartworm negative before leaving rescue. You will receive complete medical records for your dog or puppy at the time of adoption.

The adoption fee is $450 and covers the cost of all veterinary care and transportation to your area.

Our dogs and puppies are delivered via a USDA-certified van transport and receive an Interstate Health Certificate -- issue by a licensed, accredited veterinarian -- no more than 10 days before the dog or puppy leaves rescue.

All of our dogs and puppies come into rescue from the "death row" of animal shelters in the south, or are owner surrenders or strays who were "pound bound" before coming into rescue. Adopting a dog or puppy from the Dixie Pet Underground Railroad means you are truly part of a partnership to save the life of the dog or puppy that you welcome into your family.

Our dogs and puppies are fostered at our rescue in Tennessee, meaning that it isn't possible to meet the dog or puppy before adoption. Our adoption counselor works with you to do everything possible to ensure that there is a good match between the family and the dog. We have had several hundred dogs adopted using this process and most of the time, it results in happy puppies and happy people.

If for any reason an adoption is not successful, the Dixie Pet Underground Railroad will work with the adopter to find the best possible solution for the dog and the adopting family.

We can provide contact information for adopters in your area who can tell you about their experience partnering with the Underground Railroad to save the life of a dog and make the animal a part of their family.

We look forward to hearing from you and working with you to find the right dog for your family!
