My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ADOPTED 6/25/12!!

Hi! My name is Allie and I am 6 years old. When I was a puppy I was dumped out of a car in Alabama along with my sister pup. A woman driving behind the car saw us and stopped and picked us up. She brought us to a kennel operated by a woman who also boarded dogs for Sunshine Golden Retriever Rescue. My sister was adopted, but the kennel owner loved me and kept me for her own. Because she already had a multi-dog household my "home" was in the kennel. When I got to be about a year old the kennel owner made the difficult decision to give me up and find a "real" home for me, and that is how I came to live with my currently family in Vermont.

Everyone calls me a real sweetheart and that's because I am! I've been with my current family for 5 years and there have been a lot of changes this past year. I have an older female sibling and we had a big brother who passed away last year. Since our brother left us, my sister and I haven't gotten along very well. We have a new little brother, but I guess my older sister and I both want to be the boss!

My sister and I have been getting into some disagreements lately, and as hard as it is for my mommy to let go, she has asked SGRR to find me a new home without any female dogs. I would do OK as an only dog or with a big brother, maybe even two big brothers. I really do love other dogs and love to play with both girl and boy dogs, so if I'm going to be your only child I hope to have opportunities for play-dates. It's just in my own home that I want to be the #1 girl.

I'm a beautiful girl with the softest black fur imaginable – I even have auburn highlights in my hair. While I am not a Golden Retriever, I have a huge Golden heart with a multi-faceted personality. I love to keep an eye on things in my yard and I also like to cuddle. I love activity, walks, and playing, but I also love to just lie down at your feet while you read or watch TV. I am shy with new people at first, but I will bond with my new family within a few days. And if you have family and friends who come to visit often, eventually I will get to know and love them, too. I like to sing – it's not whining or barking, it really is singing. I try to speak human, but what comes out sounds like singing instead! When you want me to stop “singing,” all you have to say is "Go lie down, please" and I'll lie down and be quiet.

Because my first year of life was spent in a kennel and my last 5 years in a fenced-in yard, I need to always be fenced in or on leash, and I walk very well on leash. Even though my Mom calls me "My beautiful Allie," I'm not just another pretty face: I am really, really smart! I also know LOTS of commands – way too many to list here but my mom will share this info with you when you adopt me. Actually, my mommy would like to share some things with you so I will let her talk to you now:

"My name is Margaret and I've been Allie's Mom for five years. She has been a loyal and loving companion and is just a wonderful dog. Allie is sweet and playful. She is delightfully curious and a real comedienne (not on purpose, I don't think!). She is a quick learner and a very happy-go-lucky girl. Allie just loves to go for walks. When we start out on our walks, she will pull only very slightly at first (feeling the resistance tells her she's on a leash) and then settles in and is pure joy to walk with. On a long lead (with a loop near her collar to hold her by when near a street), Allie will explore all the smells and sounds of nature. As we walk, she will turn back to check on your whereabouts and make sure you are enjoying the walk as much as she is! She will come back to you when you call, "Allie, Come", but don't let her fool you: give her an inch and she'll take a mile and be far off after a scent or sound in the distance! She must always be leashed when outside of the confines of a sturdily fenced yard. If she spies something on the ground, like a squirrel or chipmunk or bird, she will freeze and watch intently. She looks so statuesque when she strikes that pose! And then she will take off to fetch the critter!

As energetic as Allie can be, she is as much of a cuddler and couch potato as she is an active adventurer. Rubbing her belly is one of our favorite things to do together. She has a beautiful silky black coat with golden highlights and I just love brushing her. We lie down on the carpet and as I brush her softly and gently she will slowly close her eyes as if to say "Aaaaaahh…that feels soooooo nice…" She is stunning and elegant, but she's also quite a tomboy as well!

Allie likes to play tug-o-war and she's a gentle tug-o-war player, mostly letting you win. She's not interested in retrieving - she's too smart for that and doesn't see what's in it for her to keep chasing after something and bringing it back to you if you're just going to toss it again! (Although, it might be something she could learn to do - if there were a treat in it for her!) She gets along with all visiting dogs when outside and loves to play chase – usually one dog is "It" and the others chase until someone else becomes "It". Allie will even roll onto her back and let the other dogs tug at her trying to get her up to chase her!

The words "sweetheart", "beautiful", "good girl", "great dog", "smart girl" are just a few of the words used to describe Allie by all who know Allie. It breaks my heart that I'm no longer able to give her the home she now needs and deserves. “

This is Allie here again. Everyone who knows me says, "Allie, you are a real sweetie!" My family and friends say they are going to really miss me and they are all praying for a new home where I can be relaxed and be myself --- the happy go-lucky and loving sweetheart of a girl that I am. They are praying for a home where I will be loved and adored. Please help answer their prayers and apply to adopt me!

PS - my mom thinks this poem by Lord Byron was written just for me!

She Walks In Beauty

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog - make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
