My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

"CRYSTAL"
Alexandrine Parakeet
Fostered by Karen A of Gibsonton, FL

Crystal is a 12 year old Alexandrine Parakeet. Being in the parakeet family, you may think of a small bird, but this species is definitely not! Crystal measures more than 20” in length including her long beautiful tail, and what a beauty she is! While she came into rescue with quite a few bare spots around her neck, shoulders and legs, she is starting to fill those areas in with fresh feathers. She is also enjoying a more varied diet that includes pellets, a myriad of fresh vegetables (she loves chop) and fresh fruit (her favorites are the berries!). She is a fabulous eater and will try almost anything you put in front of her. She did come in quite the seed junky, but we are working on converting seeds out of her diet. Crystal also enjoys bird bread and is learning to play with her toys (you must introduce new toys slowly for her). Crystal is a very shy bird and does take some time to trust you, but she is not aggressive at all. She does not seem to mind when other animals are around (she mostly ignores other birds, dogs and cats) and she seems fine with older children, she seems a bit nervous around small children though, so would do best in a quiet home either with adults or a family with kids over the age of 10. She will step up when asked, although she pretends that she will bite, but she doesn’t, with time and more trust building, this will most likely stop as well. She does like to go straight to your shoulder, so we are trying to teach her that the lap is a better place to be in order to get the coveted scritches! When she is feeling content and comfortable with you, she will make little sighing noises and grind her beak. Crystal is also a very quiet bird, this may change the more comfortable she becomes, but so far, she only does a few very low key and quiet calls when she really wants to be handled. Crystal is also learning about baths, however, she is still in the “it’s going to kill me!” stage, but like all of the other birds that come into FPR, she will eventually learn to love bathing as well! Crystal will make a wonderful companion for the family who will take time to earn her trust and keep her in the “food” manner in which she has become accustomed (she is quite the little piggy!).
