My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Anna’s Story

I am Anna a female cockatiel about 18 years old. I came into my foster mama’s life on April Fool’s Day and to say I was in bad shape was no joke. I was fluffed, foster mom noticed there were no droppings and she realized I hadn’t eaten or drank for hours. I had been chewing on my foot and it was bleeding, I couldn’t even use it. I was balancing on one foot while my bad foot was just dangling. I was brought into the vet within 2 hours of arriving to my foster home. They wrapped me up and gave foster mom medicines to give me. After taking some medicine for the pain, I felt well enough to eat and drink.

Over the next 4 weeks, the vets tried to heal my foot with medicine and frequent bandage changes, but my foot became gangrenous. It was determined that amputation was the only real solution. With all the generous donations from people I don’t even know, on May 9th 2012, my foot and some of my leg parted ways forever. My doctor took such good care of me and kept the anesthetics to a minimum. This was the beginning of my new life as a special needs kind of gal. Florida Parrot Rescue and my foster mom kept people informed of my progress thru the popular social media Facebook. It was awfully flattering to be cared about by so many people that I don’t know.

Since the surgery life has been wonderful for me. I spend most of the day balancing on my good foot in the bottom of the cage. I have toys, food, and other friends like sort of like me. My foster parents take care of me really well. My diet was never good, they do give me fruit and veggies, sometimes I nibble at them. The bottom of the cage is layered with soft towels to cushion my stump and paper towels on top changed twice a day to keep things tidy for me. I like to hang out with my favorite toys and flock call with the others. Foster mom says I have a soft, sweet little voice. I have found that baths make me feel and look good. I’ve also learned to pull myself up on my ladder that is kept low for me. It’s nice to perch sometimes, even with only one foot. While I don’t like be touched much, if you take me out gently I will sit on you contently for hours. I am a strong and brave little cockatiel that will keep you and your flock company. So, take me home already will ya!
