I am already neutered, housetrained, up to date with shots, good with kids, good with dogs, and good with cats.
This beautiful brindle boy is Horton. He's a happy guy, very friendly and has a beautiful coat with white speckled socks. Horton is housetrained and crate trained - he doesn't care for the crate although he will tolerate it for brief periods of time. He gets along well with dogs he's been properly introduced to and he's great with kids and cats. He has playdates with another foster parent who has two well-behaved dogs and Horton has so much playing with them. He is a sweet, loving boy who just wants to be your pal. He likes affection and will be the happiest dog in the world if you give him belly rubs and scratch around his neck & chest. He loves it when he gets to sleep with his foster dad and cuddle. And when he's done romping around with his dog friends, he likes to come inside for some snuggle time. He also enjoys playing with toys, his favorites are a Nylabone & Kong frisbee. Horton is an extremely smart guy and learns quickly. He knows his name and a few commands, like sit and come. He is a very handsome guy with the most inquisitive eyes, almost as if he understands everything you're thinking. He has a gorgeous smile and a lot of female dogs have crushes on him. Horton does have fence aggression when it comes to dogs who are not neutered and they're on the other side of the fence, displaying bad behaviors. Horton would do best with someone who has a privacy fence and a good-sized backyard for him to run around. Rescue Group Info...
Gateway Pet Guardians is dedicated to rescuing homeless pets in the St. Louis area, getting them great veterinary care, and finding them forever homes. We are currently a virtual shelter with all of our pets waiting for adoption in the care of volunteer foster families, however we are working toward a facility.
Gateway Pet Guardians is a 501c(3) tax-exempt organization. Donations are always greatly appreciated and are used to provide veterinary care for our foster pets, some of whom have been badly injured by automobile accidents, cruelty, neglect, or life on the street.
Follow us on Facebook and join our mailing list to be updated about adoption events.

Once you find an animal that you are interested in, email us and we will send your information to the foster family. You will fill out an adoption application and provide us with references. Once we have reviewed the application and contacted your references, we set up a home visit. Adoption fees are $150 for adult dogs and $195 for puppies. This fee includes shots, a spay/neuter and microchipping, as well as any other treatment the animal may have needed upon being rescued from the streets.
PJ Hightower started feeding dogs in East St. Louis, a very impoverished neighborhood in Illinois, in 1995 on her way to her sister's house. She began going on a regular basis from there and has not missed one single day since 2001. The dogs rely on PJ, waiting for her car every morning. They come running at its sound and most come straight up to her car door as she stops. She not only feeds, but medicates, domesticates and rescues when we have a home that will take one in.
A small group of people decided to form Gateway Pet Guardians around PJ's efforts in 2004. Gateway is fast growing and excited about what the future holds for the stray dogs of the East side. Or hopefully lack there of.
When we pull a dog, we give it veterinary care and put it in a foster home where it can learn to live as a dog should live and be loved. We find that with our "virtual" shelter system, the dogs tend to have better outcomes in their forever homes. Although we are saving to build a shelter, we still plan to keep our dogs in foster homes as often as possible.
We are a small group of people devoted to solving the homeless dog population in East St. Louis through education/outreach and spay/neuter programs. We would love your involvement!
