My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Buddy - Adopted 7/22/12!!!

Buddy is a 3-year-old Golden/Duck Toller mix who is just wonderful and a total sweetheart. He was at a southern shelter and set to be taken in by another rescue. When they came to pick up the dogs they were taking in, this rescue somehow forget about Buddy and he was left behind. Fatefully, SGRR was at the shelter taking in another dog and rescued Buddy as well!

Presently, Buddy is living in a foster home in CT with another Golden Retriever. His foster mom says, “Buddy is a terrific, easy dog that just wants to be loved and have a soft comfy bed to lie in. Buddy loves affection and really enjoys belly rubs! He is an incredibly sweet boy that loves everyone and is very calm for a 2-3 year old boy.

Buddy is a quick learner that had clearly been someone’s pet at some point in his life. He knows several commands such as 'paw' and 'lay down' and will happily lounge on the sofa with you. He has wonderful house manners and does not chew or destroy anything in the house at all. He is also totally housebroken, no accidents at all, and will whine or go near the door when he wants to go out.

On walks, Buddy is not a big puller but he is not used to being on a leash so he needs help learning how to walk next to his human. We are working on that and he is already improving. Over time, with consistency, Buddy will walk very nicely. When outside in the yard, Buddy lacks confidence and benefits from having someone self-assured around him for guidance. He often looks at us when he is scared. Staying calm for him is working out very nicely. Loud noises or dogs barking loudly seem to upset him, which may be leftover from his time at the shelter or when he was on his own. In a short time, he's already doing better with this as he trusts us. Buddy does feel more secure on lead (even in a fenced area) which over time I imagine he'll improve with as he feels more secure and confident in the world. Buddy has shown some interest in squirrels on walks, so he may have a tendency to chase although this is not uncommon for a hunting breed. Buddy is friendly with other dogs but does seem to want to be an only dog as he is unsure about wanting to share his new-found attention. But, who can blame him? He just wants to soak it all up!!”

This handsome boy, with the million dollar smile, just needs a home of his own now, people to love him and to love back, and his dreams will all come true!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
