My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Let’s play ball! If my foster mom doesn’t pay attention to me when I want to play ball, I just throw the ball in her lap. Who doesn’t love a slobber-covered ball? I say she’s just lazy because she doesn’t want to play as often as I do. And hey, ‘ol blue eyes (Frank Sinatra) has nothing over me, you should see my blue eyes! I’m a little overweight and someone cut off all my hair, but that just gives me that cute fuzzy puppy look. (Frankie probably had his pictures touched up; I bet he was overweight too!)

AGE: 4.5 years
SIZE: 41.5 lbs. I need to lose a few pounds (doesn’t everybody?).
TEMPERAMENT: I’m easy going; I love people and dogs!
DOGS: I get along great with other dogs, the ones in my foster home, and others I’ve met in Sheltie rescue. I don’t necessarily need another dog in my forever home if you have lots of time to play with me, but it also might be fun to have a friend to play ball with. I share my food & toys nicely with my friends.
CATS: I do fine with the cats in foster home, but I sometimes want to play “catch the cat” and the cat doesn’t care for that. I don’t know why, it’s a fun game!
KIDS: I currently do not live with children in my foster home, but I have been very nice to children on walks and with the kids in the neighborhood.
FENCE: A wood, chain link or vinyl full fence is required. I love to play ball and I can sprint like a track star. If I should get loose, I WILL chase motorcycles and maybe cars, so for my safety and fun, I need a fenced yard. MN Sheltie Rescue also requires that you keep me on a leash at all times (for my lifetime) whenever I am outside of my fenced yard.
LEASH MANNERS: I love walks so I pull on the leash; I don’t know how to heel yet. My foster mom is working on that, and my adopter will need to continue with that training. I also react to cars driving by, so we are also working on getting me to focus on my person with treats.
HOUSE-TRAINED: I’ve mastered this! I’ve never had an accident in my foster home.
CRATE TRAINED: I will go in the crate whenever you ask me to. My foster mom says I do not need to be crated while she’s away from the house since I’m a good boy and don’t get into trouble. I love to ride in my crate in the car too!
OBEDIENCE TRAINING: I haven’t had any formal training yet. My foster mom is teaching me a few things, and I will start classes in August. I’d really like to go to class with you, so we can both learn!
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Average. I love playing ball, but I can chill out, too.
BARKING: I guess you could say I’m a talker. I bark at moving cars, bicycles, planes, etc. just for fun. I'm a Sheltie, we bark!
HEALTH ISSUES: I have hypoparathyroidism (low calcium level) and take a daily medication plus Tums to keep my calcium level in the right range. Since starting treatment once I came into rescue, I’ve been doing great! I’m a good boy about taking my pills. Just wrap them in a little jerky and I gulp them right down!

If you love playing ball as much as I do, and you have a fenced yard to keep me safe while we play together, let's meet! Everybody loves me. I bet you will, too! Jake is fostered in the Fargo, ND area.

Please read our adoption guidelines at http://www.mnsheltierescue.org/howtoadopt prior to calling or emailing us, as this may answer your questions.

***The Sheltie's bio explains the type of home that will best meet that Sheltie's needs, and indicates if a fence is required, and whether the Sheltie can be placed with children, dogs or cats. Please note that we cannot guarantee the availability of the Shelties in our program, and that our priority is to meet the needs of the Shelties in our care.***

Jake's adoption fee is $250.00, and he is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm tested and on heartworm preventative (during heartworm season), is microchipped, has been bathed and brushed, etc. All of our dogs are indoor dogs and are not to be left outside unattended (not even in a fenced yard, if the adopter is not at home).
