Shelter Info...
When I took over as Executive Director, the Humane Educational Society (HES) had the 5th highest euthanasia rate in the United States and an annual intake of 15,000 animals. In 2 short years there have been dramatic changes at our shelter. This past year the HES received the “Shelter of the Year” award by Animal World for significant improvements in our programs and services in Tennessee. We now adopt 4,000 animals annually and have the 5th lowest euthanasia rate per capita in the South according to renowned animal author Meritt Clifton (less than 5% of adoptable animals). We have the highest adoption rate and the lowest euthanasia rate in Tennessee. Our off-site adoption program accounts for over 1,000 animals annually and we now have off-site adoptions at PetsMart 6 days a week. We also have a very successful low-cost spay/neuter certificate program (over 2,300 in 2 years) and all adopted animals are altered before going to their new home. Our Humane Education Program has already reached over 7,000 students this year and we have captured over 100 cats with our new Trap/Neuter/Return feral cat trapping program.
The Humane Educational Society is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee at 212 N. Highland Park Ave. We have adoptions, reclaim and animal intake Monday through Saturday from 11am until 4pm. Thursday we are open until 6pm. We have off-site adoptions at the Petsmart on Gunbarrel Road from 11am until 4pm on Saturdays.
All potential adopters must first fill out an application. If approved the adoption fee is $85.00, which includes all innoculations and rabies shot, the spay/neuter fee, a microchip and registration, de-worming and bordatella for dogs and free shelter insurance for 1 month.
Hamilton County.
Out of area adoptions are allowed with approval of a home visit performed by a staff member, a qualified volunteer or an approved rescue group.
