My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

**This kitten is located in Henrico County, near Short Pump. DOB 3/25/12** My name is Rosebud, I am a female calico kitten with some special needs. Rosebud and her litter mate had been abandoned at the age of approximately 4 weeks and were rescued by one of Hopewell, VA‘s animal control officers. Both kittens were suffering from a severe eye deformity. One of the kittens, unfortunately passed away as a result of the eyeball bursting before our rescue group could save her. We took Rosebud into our group as one of our “special needs” kitties. She suffered from an upper respiratory infection and diarrhea for a time. We had her evaluated by our vet and she is currently getting treatment on her eye sockets which require frequent cleaning along with antibiotic drops to avoid any infection. The vet is unsure if there are actual eyeballs down deep. If there are, it is doubtful if she will be able to ever see. Rosebud’s vet assures us that cats that are otherwise healthy but have lost or never had sight can still live a mostly normal, happy life indoors as cats are very adaptable.

Rosebud is now about 4 months old and weighs between 3 pounds, 4 ounces. As a result of the loving care she has been given by our groups’ volunteers, she now runs, jumps, and plays as if she hasn’t a care in the world. While encountering the occasional obstacle with a soft bump to the head, she is not deterred and simply turns to run the other way. When being held and cuddled by one of our volunteers, she happily licks their chin while purring happily. Rosebud will have surgery to access and clean out the eye sockets. Depending on what the vet finds during surgery, it will probably be necessary to then suture her eye sockets closed so that there will be no more discharge and to limit chances of future infection.
There has been much interest in Rosebud’s plight and we are confident that once we take care of these issues we will be able to find her a “forever” home once she is released by her vet.
